high ceiling wall in living
Struggling to find a cost effective way to decorate the wall in living room and kitchen side. Dover grey timber flooring installed throughout and planning to use Dulux Terrace white paint for most of the walls except for the tall wall where the TV will be located. Appreciate with any ideas?

Comments (43)Now it's beginning to work! Luv the rug! A few more red showstoppers, and I luv the post about matting your family pic, and larger frame for it. Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Comments (8)Mona you have seen exactly the dilemmas I'm facing with this room so I really appreciate your comments. I was focusing on no1, but really 2 and 3 are on my mind too. In terms of getting some continuity between the rooms I was planning on recovering the dining chairs in a fabric to tone with cushions/throws on the white couch, ottomans in a matching tone, and pulling this colour scheme through into cushions in the formal lounge. I love the spring colours at the moment (greens, blues etc) which you can see i'm playing with at the moment but you might be able to see the painting in the formal room which is orange, red and yellow with a blue/purple base. So I'm very keen on colour and so tired of the brown carpet and neutral walls. I was also going to restain the dining table and chairs to a dark mahogany colour, and change the bar stools to something more modern. re: rug closer to sofa, I've done this and it looks off-balance with nothing else in the space. It seems to work better in the middle of the carpet area at the moment. Perhaps thats because I haven't ordered the ottomans yet. I don't want to add a coffee table to this room as prefer Ottoman to put feet up on. I've attached a pic of a rug, do you think something like this would work better? re the wall: yes this is the major for me at the moment. It is a TV room so tv and speakers stay and I wont be adding any custom cabinetry. The idea was to increase the space in this room by removing all of the cabinets and they are now in the adjoining room. The speaker covers have not been painted as I needed to work out what wall covering to apply, and colour etc. so once they are painted the wall colour they will blend in better. Comments (22)As chookchook said in her recommendation about painting, put a drop cloth on the floor. Get a very safe ladder. remove the lightbulbs, and cover the outlets. Turn off the electricity to the chandelier. Then spray it with a mild cleaner (I use one I found at Target that's basically water with vinegar, until it's dripping wet. Start at the bottom and work your way up, so you don't have dirty spray dripping on the bottom of the chandelier.Work your way up and down until the dripping spray is clean. The chandelier may be gorgeous and expensive, but it seems totally out of place in the architecture of the room--more at home in a chalet than a sunny room with a window wall. I would probably try to find a way to get it removed, and sell it to someone who appreciated it better than I....See MoreAlan F

last yearPerfect spot to make a feature of your tv area, you can buy timber cladding by the sheet to make it easier to install, also look at 3D panels for a fab look.

last yearSome simple painted cladding would add texture to the TV wall and be cost effective, will the skylight effect the day time TV viewing, or does it have a blind.

last yearYou said cost effective -- that means different things to different people . Likewise , I used to say everyone has different tastes , but then I realised most people seem to go for different shades of boredom -- oops , I meant grey .
IMO the most cost effective ( result compared to cost ) would be wallpaper -- creates a feature wall , even if its a subtle design , adds some colour , breaks up all the white , even shows where the wall stops and the roof starts .
Heres some thats the next step up -- its a wallpaper/decal that is 45cm wide and 3 metres tall . Its $10 a length/drop here in NZ . Personally , I'd add the TV and a larger art print , because it could be a bit tacky just on its own .
The next step would be 3D panels like these -- adds interest and can be painted . They'd be over $1000 but under $2000 for that wall . Heaps of different styles and prices available .
I think this has 2 different styles -- 1 would be better IMO , but it shows the 3D effect and how they look painted .

last yearI just looked back , and here's a kitchen pic i posted a few months back -- i'm assuming you are going for a lighter , 'washed' version , but IMO this shows how a colour ( done as a feature wall ) lifts a place .

last yearWhat goes with the style of your home would generally be the timber slats as its the standard in a lot of new home builds now a days. As it is pretty generic now you could go with that and go to a timber yard (Not bunnings).
Cost effective option, pallet wood, plenty around and its free you just need to clean it and sand it and stain it if you want and seal it.
