Exterior house colour confusion!

Hello everyone,

Looking for some advice from a professional on colour schemes for our house exterior. We are fully renovating our brick vaneer home inside and out and wanted to go pretty modern.

The inspiration for our reno came from the attached photo. My husband wanted a black roof, black rendered walls, and the new extension clad in timber.

So the issue - At the time we chose “Monument” for the colorbond roof as it seemed to be what everyone else was choosing and honestly we thought it was the darkest colour. Our roof is getting installed this week and it looks very grey, and much lighter when the sun hits it. Not at all like the black on black vision we had for this house. The house will have the same gable ends like shown in the picture which are going to be the same colour, Monument. But now we’re not sure whether the new dark grey colour scheme (rather than black like we wanted) will go with the timber clad areas which are going to be Silvertop ash.

Any advice around what colour the brick walls should be rendered and how we should treat the timber would be appreciated!

I think it will look beautiful, just a few inspiration photos for you, get advice for the treatment of the timber by the installer, evening haze would work well with your colour scheme, but if in doubt it might be worth talking with a Dulux colour consultant.

I would stick with your original plan of having the walls rendered to match the new roof. Monument will look great with the timber. Once you add your landscaping it will be a stunning exterior.

What a fantastic architecture. When you do the brick, if you stain it with masonry /concrete stain you won't have the same issues of maintenance as with paint. They will spray it evenly - through you will have to select a deeper color - either taupe (brown-gray) or a straight charcoal. Love your windows and the classic angled railing. I think a dark gray on the siding will make the orange brick jump even more. What bothers me is the white (railing, fascia, eaves) juxtaposed with the earth toned stuff. So I would recommend camel tones - for the siding - something like http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6108-latte/ and the hopsack next darker tone for the garage door. Use the lighter tan for trim that is now white - http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6107-nomadic-desert/ Use the darkest tone if you are painting concrete steps. If you think you will stain your brick charcoal, then the white eaves and trim are probably right, and you may not want to paint it tan now and then go back. If your brick were charcoal, then I would block out the rest in grays and blue grays - leave the white eaves, but take the railing and posts charcoal too. A blue gray door - like sw smoky blue.

Oops! Your trim looks grayish blue to me. Sorry, didn't see it is charcoal until afterwards...well in that case, I think I would still do gable and wrought iron as mentioned but then try a bright yellow, like SW's BEESWAX is paint color. Are you in the islands? Sorta has "that look". Envy : )

Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely try to attach rounded tiles where I can to make it more Spanish. Also love the idea of attaching Spanish style tiles to fronts of steps etc. I will definitely do bright contrasting front door, and I really like the window flowers idea to break up all the walls. Landscaping is my strength, so got that sorted, and will begin that first. There is too much focus currently on parking spaces, and not enough on outdoor living. What do you guys think of this colour. I am happy to paint over the aluminium windows with whatever colour would suit best. Thanks very much.

I assume you have sailed into your renovations Susan ? The pictures actually look like 2 different houses -- different colours , different styles . I quite like the 'red' ( 2 storey ) side of the house -- even the conservatory and that pattern on the deck railing -- personally I'd paint it in a charcoal , but it's liveable . NOT a fan of the yellow opaque glass , and I'd paint around the outside of your 2 garage doors approx 80-100mm wide white borders to match the rest of the joinery . The other side though -- the roof ( as you said ) would be my first thing -- I'd go a browny/red , very similar to the panels on the other side of the house . The gutters and window sills I'd go a superbright blood red , and even though I agree about the cream veneer bricks and steps -- I'd leave the veneer , and either paint , or preferably tile , the steps in charcoal , and add a couple of 'chunky' stainless rails on the sides . And the base board -- I'd do it in charcoal too . It would not only look better , but make the house look longer and sleeker .

Two main points -- the inspiration pic is a modern build ; and it actually has quite a lot of off-white .

IMO those are both important -- a 70's or 80's brick veneer painted or rendered dark won't have the same proportions to the windows , even the roof overhangs , etc -- it may just look like a tarted up brick veneer place . By doing the extension in cladding , especially if it doesn't include some of those design features in the 'original' area may even emphasis that .

Quite possibly you , or your designer , have allowed for all of that , and done an integrated upgrade , but when I read your outline , it isn't clear ,

So to get back to your question about colours , I'd make sure I had at least some off-white ( a fireplace rendered to a sharp square look as per the inspo pic and/or a shorter wall done the same ) ; some battens in similar tones to your deck , etc .

Even the inspo house IMO would look better with brighter furniture -- the sunny tones like red , orange , yellow , even green would all add to that place IMO ( probably just 1 colour , a mix is harder to get right ) .

You can totally have black walls with monument roof. Most black houses would be that combination. I painted our extension monument but if I end up painting facade it will be black. Monument painted is a lot duller than black I find.
