Window in Shower?

We are renovating our ensuite and considering replacing a corner bath that sits under a large window to a shower room? I have spoken to window companies who have assured me that it is okay to do, but have had a couple of bathroom renovation companies tell me I cannot do it without ripping out the existing window, bricking up part of the wall and installing a narrow window at a higher level?

Has anyone else placed their shower near a larger window and had any issues?

If you ensure that the window surround is completely waterproofed, then it would be totally feasible and would be a great feature.

Anything is possible with a large enough budget. Are the window company doing the installation and do they guarantee their work? The window will need to comply with safety regs for the wet zone it’s in. And you need to ensure that the tiler/waterproofer you’re planning on using will also guarantee their work.

Thanks houssaon and rinqreation! Funny - hubby has the same 2 door hate! It sounds like I'm being outvoted on the shared ensuite idea. :) We've actually been set on both the configurations you suggested, we moved away from yours houssaon because we really wanted to keep a closed off office space (and hubby built the front deck and landing already for the door at the end of the hallway!). And I don't know why we shifted the door on the bedroom back to the same area, I think it was about having easy access to all the kids bedrooms. But maybe we should shift it back as you suggest rinqreation. Joice, the door at the end of the hallway is the front door, the entrance closest to the street, that you would come to first if you were a visitor. Not totally necessary, but we reinstated it before we decided we wanted the entrance up the stairs (middle bottom) which would be under a carport. Thanks for all your input!! It's really helpful to have some unattached opinions. I'm keen to hear from anyone else on the shared ensuite or 2 door hate question! :)

my fiance & i are building a new home & we'd like some practical inspiration with designing master ensuite. the size of the room is 2.8m x 5.2, it is separate from the walk in wardrobe no need to worry about steam etc entering it. we'd like a minimalistic but functional bathroom, it will has a main window facing north / east side of the room. thought about a cavity door entering the room, would like the toilet hidden from view if the other person is lying on bed. wishlist to consider: dual shower heads, with only one of them that has a rain shower head dual basin on one vanity with mirror above one toilet shower a walk in similar to the photo i've included that was found on houzz glass to prevent water all over the floors heated towel rail, similar to the individual bars in the photo

I have to ask, do you really need that bath when you have such a tight space? Unless you have tiny children (and remember that's a temporary situation!,) I suggest a larger walk in shower e.g. 1200 x 800 and heated towel rail on the wall nearer the window so its more convenient. Would definitely keep the double vanity for those busy mornings with storage under and you could add mirror fronted cabinet recessed into the wall above the basins to add more storage. Hope that helps!

Depending on latches and fixing area, etc - you could get a good glazier with a bit of finesse to custom make a mirror to fit into the window area, and then just centre the vanity below the window. Provided the window glass is obscure, it will still look like a window from the outside, but you'll have an interesting recessed mirror in your bathroom! (hope that makes sense) But, If you want a seperate shower then it looks like you'll have to alter a lot of plumbing anyway, so you might as well move the vanity while you're at it.

What is the existing windowframe made of and does the glass meet current safety regs? Do you want an opening window or just a sheet of glass?

Can you post a photo of someone hot using the shower haha . Yes , I realise thats a stupid idea -- you'd be better to set up a grandstand and sell tickets !

I can foresee possible problems with waterproofing around the window ( water getting at the framing etc ) moreso than it leaking out the window edge .

And whilst most people don't slip in the shower , well probably no more than in a bath , there might be a slightly heightened possibility of someone trying to steady themselves ( or get frisky or whatever ) so you'd probably want safety glass . And maybe frosted glass if there is a 6 storey building next door haha -- they won't pay for their tickets !
