Walk In Wardrobe Design Ideas for our space

Hi Guys,

We have about 3.37x2.48m WIR at master.

Looking for some nice idea so we can present it to the carpenter for quotes - hopefully it wont cost arms and leg :)

One of the must have is full/log LED mirror.

Outside WIR we have a space for the dressing table.

I’d put the mirror in the ensuite opp the vanity rather than waste space in the WIR. You need to work out how much long and short hanging you need. You have a window along one long side so I assume that is for drawers. To save costs for you really need doors on the hanging space.

Only you know the extent of your clothing and shoe collection. But keep it simple. Both long sides of wardrobe, install hanging and space for shoes, with long shelf above hanging space for suitcases, bedding etc. similar to photo attached. The end of wardrobe install drawers to about 1000mm high, then open shelving then shelf across the top for storage. Put your log, assumed long, mirror outside on the wall near where the desk area is. I don’t think you need different size drawers and compartments. Personally, that will restrict storage options.

Yes, measurements would help. Thank you aldrea1 for other explanation, though. That helps too. It sounds like you are going into a total gut-job! I love this! Great opportunity for your creativity. Also, it looks like you have a petite sized stove. With total remodel you can upgrade to a standard size range. Is this part of your plan? Are you going to replace any appliances? It would be good for you to keep sink and stove in original locations. It is complicated to move the stove's exhaust fan and the sink's plumbing. Not impossible, but probably $$$$$$$ and a lot of hassle…. So, I would start planning with those items--stove and sink on current walls. Wherever you put your refrigerator, it would be best to be sure side view is hidden. If refrigerator stays in current position, you could make peninsula a little smaller, so wall on the right of kitchen entrance could extend further and hide refrigerator edge----Or, move refrigerator to another location… Not too far from sink and counters, though. That would cause you inconvenience. You want a work triangle with not that many steps in-between. Do you currently have a dishwasher? Or are you planning to add one? Not much creativity in placement of a dishwasher---needs to be near water source and drain.. Are you doing the work yourselves or hiring a contractor?

Thanks for your comments everyone. We've taken your advice (Luke and NH) and changed the island to a rectangle (1200 x 3000). We lose one breakfast bar seat but gain storage and dining room space plus it shortens the distances from the island to the cooktops. It also removes the need for a corner carousel. We're much happier with this result. Dairy_maid, we've done what you suggested and walked through some common tasks. Overall it works reasonably well although we may keep some coffee spoons and butter knives in the scullery drawers for morning toast and coffee. We've also invested in a "silent" rangehood which has the motor on the outside of the house behind the fridge and we've upgraded the scullery sink to one that is 600 x 400 (internal size). Fabrication starts tomorrow. Woohoo. Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. The design has been significantly improved with your input.

Hello Rispah. Depending on how much seating you need, I'm assuming 2 x 3 seater sofas would be enough. I would consider the below layout. This option keeps the traffic from in and out of the exterior doors completely clear and creates a nice intimate setting for the living but still being open to the kitchen for social interaction. Alternatively you could have the sofas facing each other with one sofa backing to the kitchen which would be a more formal approach and encourage the view from outside those doors. If this option suited your lifestyle better, a slim styled sideboard is a great way to style the back view of your sofa.

Kate, I don’t think that is a window, I think it is a niche on the hallway side. And do you mean to say, “ to save costs Do you really need doors on the hanging space?” If so, I concur with your question.

I would only add to comments above, that to make the space feel more spacious, put the things that take up more depth, i.e, hanging and deep drawers and shelves, on one side and the end. On the other side, put the shallower storage for shoes and shallow drawers and shelves for folded items and underwear etc. That only needs to be 350-400mm deep making the open space 200mm wider. All high level shelves can be full depth for bulkier items. Put LED strip lights in the bottom of the overhead shelves to shine down onto everything below.

With the hanging space, work out how much of it needs to be full height for coats, dresses and trousers and then put the rest in double stack hanging for shirts, skirts etc. You'll be surprised as to how little full height space you need.

To save space and avoid knocking yourself on handles, do the drawers and doors(if any) with cut out handles instead on fixed handles. Drawers can be done with a slightly smaller front creating a full length opening into the drawer of only 30mm or so.

Don't get too specific with each set of drawers and shelves as it will restrict what you do with it.

Cost will be affected by the material you choose to do the fitout in too.
