Paint Exterior Verandahs & Decks

Advice on red brick exterior please

I am looking to update our tired exterior- we live on a farm and I've always wanted a 'cute' farmhouse, however we get lots of red dust so now I'm questioning my initial thoughts of painting the brick or rendering. We have put black windows at the back of the house and now I am quite drawn to the boldness of the black against the red brick. I would like to add a verandah to the house as well.
Question is: should I continue down this path and paint monument roof with black windows?
Or should I make it farm cottage cute and paint the brick and go a simple surf mist silver for the roofing? I'm so confused.

love the black windows so why not keep the red bricks and paint the roof a lighter colour (Colorbond Surfmist not Monument), paint the roller door a red to match the bricks and the new verandah framing could be black and all the eaves and any extra trims white...

Your home is a very solid practical build for the era and location. To make it into a cute farmhouse you would have to do more than paint it. It will need the harsh straight lines soften by adding structural elements. See the attached photo. But, for your situation, as mentioned with the red dust and the expense you have already gone to with installing windows, I would give your “cute farmhouse “ look away. Install dark window frames, and a Colorbond shale grey roof or Monument, but depends on your climate for the roof colour. Light is better for hot climate. Add external structural elements in black or stained timber to soften the right angles. Paint the garage door the same colour as the window frames.

Take a clue from the pics....Do it's hard when you're starting and everything needs doing. Find a picture you like and use that as a guide. Do you like the looks of the colors in the two pictures above? Very simple and straight forward with beige/gray bricks and white and black accent colors for shutters and trim.

An old post , so sort of sorry to revive it ! The lighter shade looks a lot better , but something doesn't gel with me -- it looks like a beautiful Million Dollar house , let down by someone trying to save $10k . IF it was my place , the 2 things I would do is change ( or hide ) the round pillars , and the relatively cheap looking brickwork . I'd go for quality stonework in place of the brickwork , and carry the theme through to the pillars -- probably 'squaring' the pillars . In fact , I personally don't like the slightly strange 'extra' pillars -- I'd try to 'cut back' to 4 pillars , in a quality natural stone . Once I had done those 2 'improvements' , I'd sand back and restain a darker brown the entrance doors and surrounds -- that golden look screams 1980's IMO . I realise they tie in with the existing colours , but I'd want to get away from that look . Maybe I'm strange . . . . . . .

I assume you have sailed into your renovations Susan ? The pictures actually look like 2 different houses -- different colours , different styles . I quite like the 'red' ( 2 storey ) side of the house -- even the conservatory and that pattern on the deck railing -- personally I'd paint it in a charcoal , but it's liveable . NOT a fan of the yellow opaque glass , and I'd paint around the outside of your 2 garage doors approx 80-100mm wide white borders to match the rest of the joinery . The other side though -- the roof ( as you said ) would be my first thing -- I'd go a browny/red , very similar to the panels on the other side of the house . The gutters and window sills I'd go a superbright blood red , and even though I agree about the cream veneer bricks and steps -- I'd leave the veneer , and either paint , or preferably tile , the steps in charcoal , and add a couple of 'chunky' stainless rails on the sides . And the base board -- I'd do it in charcoal too . It would not only look better , but make the house look longer and sleeker .

Keep the red bricks and the same roofing colour with gutters, down pipes and barge boards to match, plus the garage the same as the roof. Your new rear windows and doors will work with this. I think if you work on adding pergolas to the exterior will add some interest.
