In what condition are your current windows, frames and glass, Camden? Do you live in a climate/environment where you would really benefit from double glazing, which I’m assuming you don’t have? Were you planning to replace like for like or increase / change the size and placement of your windows. I do agree larger architraves would increase the street appeal but that could be done without touching the current windows, if they were in good condition or relatively easily salvageable. Cedar windows are also considered an upgrade, so it would all be a balance of your personal preferences, budget and weighing the advantages against the disadvantages. I’d also recommend contacting a couple of local real estate agents to get their opinion regarding cost v value as that is very area specific. Tip: be upfront, tell them you’re not considering selling atm but would like to get their advice. Our experience is that they’re usually happy to help and we’ve been told it’s advantageous to them as it deepens their own pool of knowledge. Thanks Jan. One of the front windows upstairs has some pretty bad water damage (has also damaged the wall which we will need to repair). Otherwise the windows need sanding back and recoating as they are fairly weathered on the outside particularly on northern side. Structurally they are fine (except one). Glass is fine- single glazed. We are in Sydney. Current thinking is to not go with double glazed. We are thinking of resizing one of the windows upstairs and also putting in a new window (frosted on left side of house- western side - to let in more light). Otherwise pretty much a like for like). We intend to also paint the house e.g. light grey and blue (TBC) to brighten it up. I did discuss briefly with an agent a while ago and they did agree new windows “would add value” but I’m still not sure whether it is really worth it and wanted to hear others’ opinions. It’s unlikely you’ll get your money back unless you plan to make a huge makeover of the entire property. I’d paint them white and add a wooden border trim to amp up their appeal.

Painting the exterior of your house in a light grey, sanding and repainting your windows in a fresh white, and repairing the damaged windows would definitely add value. Spending big amounts of money changing them to aluminium windows would be unlikely to add any extra value.
