Small extension / Use for small corner

Hello Houzzers! We have a small house with a large deck. There is a pokey corner on the deck (1.6x1.8) which I’m looking to improve in functionality and looks. Any suggestions for how to kit it out more attractively? FYI - we’ll be doing a kitchen renovation also to include opening the window up to a servery and new French doors.

One out of the box idea I had was to make it into a toilet room, with door onto deck. This would actually be super useful as we only have one bathroom inside, and we spend a lot of time outside (3 small kids and large yard). Any idea if this would be ridiculously expensive for such a small space?

Otherwise, using it better for storage / outdoor kitchen ish?

You’d need permits and plans to add a toilet so that would eat up about $15-20k before you even start. Small additions (done properly) are rarely cost effective.

Yes, I know. Small spaces are so hard sometimes. But look at Taiwan, or Thailand, they have small spaces and definitely make it fit! It seems like you like to change things around often. I change my room around too. For organization, I suggest get a small desk and stick some shelves over the desk only. Youll have alot more creative room on the floor that way. Have a rolling side table. 2 floor liners and/or rug throws to place wherever. Comfy pillows to lounge on the floor. Go to Anna's linens or the nearest discount fabric store and get some cool fabrics to use as window shades. You can change the fabric depending on the season or if you get sick of the color. You would be amazed the difference in how your room looks depending upon the color the curtain creates when light shines in the room. For the bed, Get two throws, have fun with the design, get something you like regardless if you think it will match or not. Lastly, you can put the extra throws, pillows, blankets in bins under you bed. Cheers!

Oh so cool you noticed that we're trying to achieve a french country/industrial look or did we write that somewhere? I've attached some other photos of a bedroom and the foyer (of those we've taken so far), but are absolutely open to suggestions on a "beachy" feel as well or instead of. Although because its a beach house we don't want to go over board on expense and hence keeping what we already have, and just adding personality to it, if you get what we mean. Kingsize Black upholstered headboard to come in that bedroom.

Hi anne, that's what I was originally thinking, my issue is what colour I use for the 'pop' :) I keep coming back to a teal/turquoise colour (it's one of my favourite colours!!), I love blues, purples, teal/turquoise - many on here have suggested yellow but I'm really not sure about it. Here in New Zealand we're in Autumn, nearing Winter so uncertain about the yellow. I found these cushions that I've fallen in love it, and wondering how I could make these work.. do I try teal and mustard together, as an interior designer suggested?

Well that is an interesting picture. I can assure you that hanging wall gardens are all the rage and that is a great idea but they can also be high maintenance if exposed to high winds / sunshine etc. I have seen some lovely fake ones that would do just as well. You could also have a few pots with additional greenery. As you say your view is not "great" maybe you can have a creeper in one of the pots that can weave its way through the railing. I probably wouldn't go for one big chair as it could dominate the entire space. I would consider a table with a couple of fold-able chairs .... something that is comfortable, inviting if you have friends over but can be placed in a corner if you just want to open up the space. I do not think you need a carpet and but maybe some fancy outdoor tiles will look just as nice. You want it to be easy care and weather proof. Do you need or wish to incorporate a washing line? A pull out one from a wall will be perfect that way you can retract it back when you are not using it. If you deck gets too much sun, you may want to consider some shade shutters. I have seen them called 'plantation' shutters. GOOD LUCK

we need a floorplan for the whole house with dimensions to make realistic suggestion but it looks like you already need extra space for the fridge and freezer so i wonder if the space could be converted to a laundry with powder loom and use existing laundry for a pantry or???

Hi all. We’re not continuing with the large extension ☹️ The costs just got too high for what we’d get in return (extension/renovations costs and combined with some other needed general repairs (fencing etc). We’re now thinking of smaller, mostly internal renovations. We’re much more comfortable for the predicted costs for this. It won’t give us everything we want, but we’ve come to terms with that! I actually might do a new post for advice on that in general… I just posted this one today as it jumped into my mind today.
I ideally did want to extend the existing laundry into this corner and make it laundry/pantry or laundry/powder. But the costs were high for such a small extension. I was then wondering today if we could do something with it from the outside side. If that makes sense!
