Does Your Home Have Peter Pan Tendencies?
Be inspired by the popular, and playful, homes on Houzz that don't want to grow up
Many of us can surely relate to not wanting to grow up. Remember sacrificing your love of Barbies, cartoons, or your beloved drum kit to become a respectable adult? Seems like an unfair bargain, if you ask me. These big kids at heart prove that childhood doesn’t need to be forgotten, and that all the best bits can be put on display at home.

Animated design. For a family in Sydney, cartoons aren’t just for kids. Decorating their two-bedroom apartment with brightly-coloured walls, figurines from their favourite cartoons and toys they share with their two sons, they show us a sophisticated side to childhood.

Cool kids on the block. In a home with five kids, it’s hard for the grown-ups not to share in all the fun. Cool parents Teresa and Justin Peckett have taken playtime to the next level by adding a skateboard ramp in their backyard. Teresa adds that her kids are definitely the envy of the other skateboarders in the neighbourhood.

Barbies aren’t just for little girls. Don’t feel as though you need to toss away your precious Barbie collection as you bridge the gap to adulthood. Georgia English is a talented artist whose home in Mount Eliza is a collection of her artwork and quirky secondhand finds. Her friends gave her some Jamaican Barbie dolls knowing she has a love of pieces that add an aspect of fun to her home.
Cheeky bunnies. Climbing walls. After grappling with a plan for their home renovation, a couple decided to go with their eight-year-old twins’ idea. A playground is the result, with a climbing net at the top of the study, which the boys regularly climb up to have a break from homework and check out the surrounding view.

Playing games. Old-school board games are stacked in this home in Melbourne as a reminder of the homeowner Ramona Audrey’s childhood and as a way to bring out the inner-child in her visitors. “I grew up playing board games; both sides of my family can play them for days on end, which is pretty handy when you have a family reunion that gets rained on,” says Audrey.
Strolling down memory lane. Jane Guy’s home is a collection of favourite childhood pieces, from vintage toys to music books. “There is a certain element of kitsch to a lot of these objects that appeals to me. I want my home to be a happy place,” she says.
The Dr. Seuss and Little Golden books in the picture have travelled with Miss Jane since her childhood. “Many are inscribed to me from my parents, aunts and grandparents, or have my name written in them in my own childhood hand, and I have never been able to part with them,” she says.

Toys become old friends. Remember when your toys were your best friends? Each of them had a name and special place in your heart. Homeowner Jennifer Witcombe keeps ‘Chubby Chops’ at her front door. “He was purchased from the Tyabb Packing House from a lady who was selling everything off and closing down,” Witcombe says. “She explained that Chubby had been with her for over 30 years and that she suspected he originated from the Orient some time around the 1930s. She would only agree to selling him if I promised to always call him by his given name – Mr Chubby Chops.”
