Room of the Week: A Light Scandi Kitchen With Black Highlights
Concrete tiles, light oak veneers and black pendants work wonders in this light and airy family kitchen
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
The brief was to create a contemporary Scandinavian interior with a timeless look and feel, to suit the clients’ adult family and lifestyle. We were advised to focus on natural timber, concrete finishes and some luxurious elements. This was achieved through smart choices in cabinetry, flooring and finishing options.

Starting point
The basis for the design was the concrete-look floor tile and oak dining table. We wanted to ensure that these two items could be incorporated into the palette of the kitchen to cohesively integrate the two areas. Selecting a matt-finish benchtop tied the whole scheme together, along with the warm tones of the laminate to the dining table.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures
When we were engaged for the project the kitchen position was already decided. But we worked closely with the clients to put thoughtful design into the layout of the kitchen and its cabinetry.
We included drawers for smart storage of utensils, spice racks in the pantry, and spaced out shelves to store Tupperware containers. We spent a lot of time working through every aspect of the space to ensure it met the clients’ lifestyle requirements.

What challenges did you work around?
It was hard to convince the clients that the mirrored splashback was a suitable inclusion for the space, as they were concerned about the ability to keep it clean and free of marks.
This was overcome by the addition of the 150-millimetre-high stone plinth (in the same colour as the benchtop). This means when the benchtop is wiped down it does not leave a wet sponge mark between the benchtop and splashback.

The floor plan
Why do you think this room works?
I think every fitting and colour has a relationship together. Each item complements the next – from the black pendants, mirrored splashback and sink mixer to the oak cabinetry that offsets the flooring and bar stools. The balance and use of colour ensure that there are no overpowering elements.
