Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
The layout of the open-plan kitchen/living/dining area was a natural progression of the different functions as you move through the space. It was practical to have the kitchen to the rear of the room, where you typically would stand, so you can look over the dining and living areas. The furniture arrangement helps to define the space.
