Ah… the sunroom. It is truly stunning and the owners love it. They saw the sunroom Jim designed for another cottage and they knew they wanted a similar addition to their cottage. The striking stone fireplace with farmhouse beam mantle and the pine ceiling and trim create a warm, casual atmosphere perfect for entertaining and relaxation. And, of course, three of the “walls” are all windows to bring the outside in.

The size of the new forest room was fixed by zoning constraints and the previously existing screen porch. Although just 8’ x 14’, the views from and into this small room transform the character of the adjoining larger rooms.

Sunroom faces south and is located between the living and dining room. Art glass lantern we designed for kitchen table was moved here by later owners. The Greenes' often employed a continuous header trim at the top of doors and windows to unify rooms and provide a more intimate scale. As shown here, plaster frieze and ceiling were usually painted a lighter tone. Michael J. Locke photo

Innovative Design Build
Our clients wished for an all weather sunroom for their busy family. Using the existing brick exterior wall and full glass barn doors gives the space a rustic industrial feel. The addition of heated floors under the tile in the center of the room, allows for it's use throughout the winter months. With little ones and their pets playing outside in the dirt, an outdoor shower makes a lot of sense too! "As bright as possible" was also on the wish list and I think we covered that with the slider doors and full windows. Happy Summer and Winter! Photos: Anastasia Alkema Photography

Remember that statement sunroom on the back of the home? The gorgeous interior does not disappoint. Windows galore keep that sunshine and river view coming in from every angle.

City of Chicago lots are SMALL - this homeowner decided to maximize space and light with a custom room tying his garage to his home. In the process, they added space for a sunlight filled structure incorporating a mudroom, sunroom, potting shed and hallway. A custom addition to a new home.
