After finalizing the layout for their new build, the homeowners hired SKP Design to select all interior materials and finishes and exterior finishes. They wanted a comfortable inviting lodge style with a natural color palette to reflect the surrounding 100 wooded acres of their property. http://www.skpdesign.com/inviting-lodge SKP designed three fireplaces in the great room, sunroom and master bedroom. The two-sided great room fireplace is the heart of the home and features the same stone used on the exterior, a natural Michigan stone from Stonemill. With Cambria countertops, the kitchen layout incorporates a large island and dining peninsula which coordinates with the nearby custom-built dining room table. Additional custom work includes two sliding barn doors, mudroom millwork and built-in bunk beds. Engineered wood floors are from Casabella Hardwood with a hand scraped finish. Set upon an oversized and highly sought-after creekside lot in Brentwood, this ​two story home and full guest home exude a casual, contemporary farmhouse style and vibe. The main residence boasts 5 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms, each ensuite with thoughtful touches that accentuate the home’s overall classic finishes. The master retreat opens to a large balcony overlooking the yard accented by mature bamboo and palms. Other features of the main house include European white oak floors, recessed lighting, built in speaker system, attached 2-car garage and a laundry room with 2 sets of state-of-the-art Samsung washers and dryers. The bedroom suite on the first floor enjoys its own entrance, making it ideal for guests. The open concept kitchen features Calacatta marble countertops, Wolf appliances, wine storage, dual sinks and dishwashers and a walk-in butler’s pantry. The loggia is accessed via La Cantina bi-fold doors that fully open for year-round alfresco dining on the terrace, complete with an outdoor fireplace. The wonderfully imagined yard contains a sparkling pool and spa and a crisp green lawn and lovely deck and patio areas. Step down further to find the detached guest home, which was recognized with a Decade Honor Award by the Los Angeles Chapter of the AIA in 2006, and, in fact, was a frequent haunt of Frank Gehry who inspired its cubist design. The guest house has a bedroom and bathroom, living area, a newly updated kitchen and is surrounded by lush landscaping that maximizes its creekside setting, creating a truly serene oasis.

Ward Jewell, AIA was asked to design a comfortable one-story stone and wood pool house that was "barn-like" in keeping with the owner’s gentleman farmer concept. Thus, Mr. Jewell was inspired to create an elegant New England Stone Farm House designed to provide an exceptional environment for them to live, entertain, cook and swim in the large reflection lap pool. Mr. Jewell envisioned a dramatic vaulted great room with hand selected 200 year old reclaimed wood beams and 10 foot tall pocketing French doors that would connect the house to a pool, deck areas, loggia and lush garden spaces, thus bringing the outdoors in. A large cupola “lantern clerestory” in the main vaulted ceiling casts a natural warm light over the graceful room below. The rustic walk-in stone fireplace provides a central focal point for the inviting living room lounge. Important to the functionality of the pool house are a chef’s working farm kitchen with open cabinetry, free-standing stove and a soapstone topped central island with bar height seating. Grey washed barn doors glide open to reveal a vaulted and beamed quilting room with full bath and a vaulted and beamed library/guest room with full bath that bookend the main space. The private garden expanded and evolved over time. After purchasing two adjacent lots, the owners decided to redesign the garden and unify it by eliminating the tennis court, relocating the pool and building an inspired "barn". The concept behind the garden’s new design came from Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello with its wandering paths, orchards, and experimental vegetable garden. As a result this small organic farm, was born. Today the farm produces more than fifty varieties of vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers; many of which are rare and hard to find locally. The farm also grows a wide variety of fruits including plums, pluots, nectarines, apricots, apples, figs, peaches, guavas, avocados (Haas, Fuerte and Reed), olives, pomegranates, persimmons, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and ten different types of citrus. The remaining areas consist of drought-tolerant sweeps of rosemary, lavender, rockrose, and sage all of which attract butterflies and dueling hummingbirds. Photo Credit: Laura Hull Photography. This project has been very special to work on as the clients went through the unfortunate flooding of their house and most of the furnishings were damaged by water. Trying to help this family rebuild and return into their sweet home has been our top priority. We had a pleasure to replaced all damaged window coverings and install a new beautiful drapes that not only added function but framed the windows and softened the entire space. We've selected a linen blend fabric to complement the relaxed and elegant feel of the house. The same fabric was used on all rooms including living/breakfast area, dining room and master bedroom. A combination of different textures and natural tones gave this modern farmhouse a very welcoming and sophisticated feel. It's been a pleasure to see this family moving back to their gorgeous home.

Such a fun lake house vibe - you would never guess this was a dark garage before! A cozy electric fireplace in the entertainment wall on the right adds ambiance. Barn doors hide the TV during wild ping pong matches, or slide to neatly cover display shelving. The double glass door at the back of the room was the location of the old overhead garage door.
