Kitchen Design ConceptsOne of the biggest investments you can make in your home is in your kitchen. Now with the Revive model, you don’t have to break the bank to get an updated kitchen with new finishes and a whole new look! This powder blue kitchen we are sharing today is a classic example of such a space! The kitchen had a great layout, the cabinets had good bones, and all it needed were some simple updates. Cabinets
As previously mentioned, the kitchen cabinetry already had great bones. So, in this case, we were able to refinish them to a painted cream on the perimeter. As for the island, we created a new design where new cabinetry was installed. New cabinets are from WWWoods Shiloh, with a raised panel door style, and a custom painted finish for these powder blue cabinets.
Countertops
The existing kitchen countertops were able to remain because they were already in great condition. Plus, it matched the new finishes perfectly. This is a classic case of “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke”!
Backsplash
For the backsplash, we kept it simple with subway tile but played around with different sizes, colors, and patterns. The main backsplash tile is a Daltile Modern Dimensions, in a 4.5×8.5 size, in the color Elemental Tan, and installed in a brick-lay formation. The splash over the cooktop is a Daltile Rittenhouse Square, in a 3×6 size, in the color Arctic White, and installed in a herringbone pattern.
Fixtures and Finishes
The plumbing fixtures we planned to reuse from the start since they were in great condition. In addition, the oil-rubbed bronze finish went perfectly with the new finishes of the kitchen. We did, however, install new hardware because the original kitchen did not have any. So, from Amerock we selected Muholland pulls which were installed on all the doors and drawers.
Jonathan SalmonLocated in Cowen Heights, this kitchen, designed by Jonathan Salmon, is a beautiful traditional kitchen with a fun colorful spin. These custom Bentwood cabinets are a mix of Burnished Copper on Alder and custom glazed moss colored finish. The glass panes on the cabinets open the room to appear larger. Additionally, the green mossy finish on the cabinets brings a fun, playful element into the design of the kitchen. The Sub Zero fridge is integrated into the kitchen by using the same finish as the cabinets. The Shaw farmhouse sink blends in well with the Santa Cecilia granite countertop and copper tones used throughout the kitchen. The island provides an easy workspace for prepping and serving meals. There is an additional sink that allows are client more space to prep while cooking. This island also has a wrought iron support detail that makes this island unique to this kitchen. Above the Thermadoor range is a custom hammered copper hood that really ties the room together. The designer used Bevelle subway tiles for the back splash, as well as a custom desing behind the range.
Diane Plesset, CMKBD, NCIDQ, C.A.P.S.Custom carved valance is inspired by a traditional Norwegian motif.
Decorative Concrete TransformationsThis kitchen was originally created in the early 70's, and was very dated. We gutted it, taking out the old dark wood cabinets and grouted tile, and re-did the kitchen with all white cabinets and a few glass fronts. We also added a beautiful terrazzo countertop made with concrete and glass, with a touch of glow in the dark aggregate to give it a glow at night.
Cranbury Design Center LLCA brick wall, original to this 100 plus year-old house, forms the backdrop for this kitchen packed with unique design features. Espresso stained wood cabinetry has contrasting tops of Giallo Argento granite and a stunning upper island top of live edged walnut wood. The pass-through bar has a special holder for chilling a bottle of wine. New wood floors of 6 inch wide white oak planks warm up the stainless appliances and stainless farm sink. The shiny glass island pendant lighting and crystal accented hardware add a nice touch of sparkle to this charming space.
Stephen GraverA mixture of natural and cluster oak, together with painted wood and black granite worktops, create a large, light and workable space. The kitchen combines free-standing bespoke furniture with built-in units, creating a harmonious cross-over between the modern and traditional. Fridges are housed in a hand painted cupboard; bins are concealed in their own cabinet and a large island unit forms a centrepiece in the room.

Atkin DraperiesCurved bench seating for a breakfast nook. The back is diamond tufted velvet and the bottom is vinyl with French seams.
San Luis Kitchen Co.Tuscan design using a burnished & glazed finish on oak cabinets by Wood-Mode. The columns either side of the range pull out with spice and bottle storage behind. The curved profile of the top drawer-heads extends around the kitchen.
When the homeowners decided to move from San Francisco to the Central Coast, they were looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, a unique place to call their own, and an environment conducive to raising their young children. They found it all in San Luis Obispo. They had owned a house here in SLO for several years that they had used as a rental. As the homeowners own and run a contracting business and relocation was not impossible, they decided to move their business and make this SLO rental into their dream home.
As a rental, the house was in a bare-bones condition. The kitchen had old white cabinets, boring white tile counters, and a horrendous vinyl tile floor. Not only was the kitchen out-of-date and old-fashioned, it was also pretty worn out. The tiles were cracking and the grout was stained, the cabinet doors were sagging, and the appliances were conflicting (ie: you could not open the stove and dishwasher at the same time).
To top it all off, the kitchen was just too small for the custom home the homeowners wanted to create.
Thus enters San Luis Kitchen. At the beginning of their quest to remodel, the homeowners visited San Luis Kitchen’s showroom and fell in love with our Tuscan Grotto display. They sat down with our designers and together we worked out the scope of the project, the budget for cabinetry and how that fit into their overall budget, and then we worked on the new design for the home starting with the kitchen.
As the homeowners felt the kitchen was cramped, it was decided to expand by moving the window wall out onto the existing porch. Besides the extra space gained, moving the wall brought the kitchen window out from under the porch roof – increasing the natural light available in the space. (It really helps when the homeowner both understands building and can do his own contracting and construction.) A new arched window and stone clad wall now highlights the end of the kitchen. As we gained wall space, we were able to move the range and add a plaster hood, creating a focal nice focal point for the kitchen.
The other long wall now houses a Sub-Zero refrigerator and lots of counter workspace. Then we completed the kitchen by adding a wrap-around wet bar extending into the old dining space. We included a pull-out pantry unit with open shelves above it, wine cubbies, a cabinet for glassware recessed into the wall, under-counter refrigerator drawers, sink base and trash cabinet, along with a decorative bookcase cabinet and bar seating. Lots of function in this corner of the kitchen; a bar for entertaining and a snack station for the kids.
After the kitchen design was finalized and ordered, the homeowners turned their attention to the rest of the house. They asked San Luis Kitchen to help with their master suite, a guest bath, their home control center (essentially a deck tucked under the main staircase) and finally their laundry room. I wish I could show you the rest of the house. The homeowners took a poor rental house and turned it into a showpiece! They added custom concrete floors, unique fiber optic lighting, large picture windows, and much more. There is now an outdoor kitchen complete with pizza oven, an outdoor shower and exquisite garden. They added a dedicated dog run to the side yard for their pooches and a rooftop deck at the very peak. Such a fun house.
Lima KitchensA colour scheme with bold touches and high contrast were key along with lighting layers and features. This kitchen is vastly more functional than before, and packed full of easy access units whilst being a social space for large gatherings. We introduced the gold features to this light grey and indigo blue kitchen, through the plinths, finger rails, Quooker tap and feature quartz from Cambria. This tasteful space truly hits the brief for WOW factor, practicalities and sociability.
