Our client’s garden was tired and neglected, full of children’s play equipment and a small area of block paving. They were keen to create a garden that provided interesting and varied play opportunities for their two children, whilst still retaining areas that could be enjoyed by the adults. We removed the old garage, and the unattractive conifer hedge in the top corner of the garden. An area has been created for their son to kick his football, and this is framed by various climbing structures that in turn surround the trampoline area. Monkey bars double as a pergola, and in time planting will soften their appearance. A small seating area has been created to capture the evening sun, whilst a generous patio has been built outside the kitchen. This is edged with chunky raised beds, planted with colourful and long-flowering perennials that will attract bees and butterflies throughout the summer. Some of the beds have been set aside for growing vegetables, and my client reports that they have enjoyed a healthy crop of tomatoes and salad leaves this summer! New trees have been planted to provide screening, colour and berries for the birds.

Natural Limestone steps takke you from the lower lawn area up to the main dining patio. Natural and native planting shoulder the steps and have grown over them to soften the harsh edges of the stone.

Aralia: Innovation in Landscape DesignAralia: Innovation in Landscape Design
John Glover A Late 14th century distinctive, rural building with a Grade II listing. Our clients were working on internal renovations and extensions prior to the construction of the garden. When they approached Aralia they were requiring a contemporary garden to match the redeveloped interior rooms. The family orientated space that we created in the courtyard, was only just a part of a larger garden, but was designed in order to become the more usable area for the family. Aralia used a clean, contemporary design, combined with more traditional references such as the pergola detailing, black metal edge details and the brickwork chosen. This project included a complete re-model of the space into three separate terraces, with surrounding textual planting and specimen trees. Features of the design included a pleached hedge to enable privacy, bespoke fabricated oak and metal pergolas, and atmospheric lighting. Aralia connected the rest of the natural garden through sculpture landform to blend the contemporary and formal with the natural and informal. Other elements of this garden include a Yorkstone edged bed and instant box hedging to frame the views to the front of the property.

Having completed their new build in a semi-rural subdivision, these clients turned their attention to the garden, painting the fence black, building a generous deck and then becoming stuck for inspiration! On their wishlist were multiple options for seating, an area for a fire- bowl or chiminea, as much lawn as possible, lots of fruit trees and bee-friendly plantings, an area for a garden shed, beehive and vegetable garden, an attractive side yard and increased privacy. A new timber fence was erected at the end of the driveway, with an upcycled wrought iron gate providing access and a tantalising glimpse of the garden beyond. A pebbled area just beyond the gate leads to the deck and as oversize paving stones created from re-cycled bricks can also be used for informal seating or a place for a chiminea or fire bowl. Pleached olives provide screening and backdrop to the garden and the space under them is underplanted to create depth. The garden wraps right around the deck with an informal single herringbone 'gardener's path' of recycled brick allowing easy access for maintenance. The lawn is angled to create a narrowing perspective providing the illusion that it is much longer than it really is. The hedging has been designed to partially obstruct the lawn borders at the narrowest point to enhance this illusion. Near the deck end, the lawn takes a circular shape, edged by recycled bricks to define another area for seating. A pebbled utility area creates space for the garden shed, vegetable boxes and beehive, and paving provides easy dry access from the back door, to the clothesline and utility area. The fence at the rear of the house was painted in Resene Woodsman "Equilibrium" to create a sense of space, particularly important as the bedroom windows look directly onto this fence. Planting throughout the garden made use of low maintenance perennials that are pollinator friendly, with lots of silver and grey foliage and a pink, blue and mauve colour palette. The front lawn was completely planted out with fruit trees and a perennial border of pollinator plants to create street appeal and make the most of every inch of space!
