A whole house renovation and second story addition brought this unique 1950s home into a mid-century modern vernacular. Light-filled interior spaces mix with new filtered views, and the new master bedroom is surprising in its “tree house” feel. This home was featured on the 2018 AIA East Bay Home Tours. A two-bed, two-bath condo located in the Historic Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, DC was reimagined with the clean lined sensibilities and celebration of beautiful materials found in Mid-Century Modern designs. A soothing gray-green color palette sets the backdrop for cherry cabinetry and white oak floors. Specialty lighting, handmade tile, and a slate clad corner fireplace further elevate the space. A new Trex deck with cable railing system connects the home to the outdoors.

The customer fell in love with the glass and stone hexagon tile, but to keep the project in budget we chose a less expensive oversized subway tile with glass linear pencil to keep the cost in check.

We completed the project with a three-quarter bath with a floor to ceiling textured subway tile shower, a full length niche for plenty of storage for all the soaps. It's contrasted with the black fixtures and black hex flooring. The open wooden shelves add another element to the space and provide easy access to bathroom necessities. This year might just be the year of the bathrooms. Since January, I have been working on six different bathroom projects. They range from full to partial renovation projects. I recently finished the design plans for the three bathrooms at the #themanchesterflip. I have also worked on a very cool master bathroom design project that has been approved and the work is scheduled to start by March. And then, there were the two fulls baths from #clientkoko that are now completed. Today I am happy to share the first one of them.

This 1956 John Calder Mackay home had been poorly renovated in years past. We kept the 1400 sqft footprint of the home, but re-oriented and re-imagined the bland white kitchen to a midcentury olive green kitchen that opened up the sight lines to the wall of glass facing the rear yard. We chose materials that felt authentic and appropriate for the house: handmade glazed ceramics, bricks inspired by the California coast, natural white oaks heavy in grain, and honed marbles in complementary hues to the earth tones we peppered throughout the hard and soft finishes. This project was featured in the Wall Street Journal in April 2022.
