This house was designed as a second home for a Bay Area couple as a summer retreat to spend the warm summer months away from the fog in San Francisco. Built on a steep slope and a narrow lot, this 4000 square foot home is spread over 3 floors, with the master, guest and kids bedroom on the ground floor, and living spaces on the upper floor to take advantage of the views. The main living level includes a large kitchen, dining, and living space, connected to two home offices by way of a bridge that extends across the double height entry. This bridge area acts as a gallery of light, allowing filtered light through the skylights above and down to the entry on the ground level. All living space takes advantage of grand views of Lake Washington and the city skyline beyond. Two large sliding glass doors open up completely, allowing the living and dining space to extend to the deck outside. On the first floor, in addition to the guest room, a “kids room” welcomes visiting nieces and nephews with bunk beds and their own bathroom. Spectacular views, a tricky site and the desirability of maintaining views and light for adjacent neighbors inspired our design for this new house in Clarendon Heights. The facade features subtle shades of stucco, coordinating dark aluminum windows and a bay element which twists to capture views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Built into an upsloping site, retaining walls allowed us to create a bi-level rear yard with the lower part at the main living level and an elevated upper deck with sweeping views of San Francisco. The interiors feature an open plan, high ceilings, luxurious finishes and a dramatic curving stair with metal railings which swoop up to a second-floor sky bridge. Well-placed windows, including clerestories flood all of the interior spaces with light.

In our opinion stairs have to be light, a piece of art and inspiring. We added elegant metal mesh as a railing to existing spiral staircase that gets a Moroccan effect thanks to this beautiful patterned tile that we used for risers and funky pendant lights coming down from the ceiling.

What type of staircase works best for me?

The first consideration when planning a stair design is space. A double-sided staircase, for instance, will only work in a large area; whereas an L-shaped staircase or straight staircase are more compact options. The next step in the stair design is deciding on a style. Elliptical or curved stairs offer elegance, while spiral stairs can appear more urban. If you want a contemporary design, floating stairs are a great way to circulate light.

What balustrade and handrail options are available?

Balustrades and handrails are important for safety but also allow you to get creative with your stair design. Many staircases are built up against a wall – if that’s the case, the wall itself can act as a balustrade; it will just need an attached handrail. Glass balustrades are great if you want to show off your staircase as an architectural feature, whereas a timber balustrade tends to be a more timeless option. Metal balustrades are versatile in that they can be industrial, elegant or quirky. Consider functionality, too, especially if you have kids. An open railing, for instance could become a safety hazard.

What type of material should I use for stair treads?

Timber stair treads are strong and timeless, but aren’t suited to those with indoor pets as they’ll show up scuffs. Carpeted or stone stair treads are more traditional options, whereas stainless steel and glass can be quite contemporary. Concrete stair treads are increasingly popular for those looking to create a sculptural masterpiece out of their staircase – just imagine the effect of floating concrete stairs, daringly cantilevered. Also consider using a combination of materials to create visual interest.
