The homeowners had spent years under the guidance of a landscape architect selectively editing and revealing the natural features of the property, so that when the conversation about the architecture started, the homeowners were well attuned to the site. This knowledge and intimacy guided the house design with the final result being an outgrowth of the knoll on which it sits. A long gabled volume perches on top of the knoll and faces meadows to the west. Arranged to take best advantage of the topography and maximize connection to the outdoors, each space is uniquely shaped to its surrounding and function. Exterior materials and larges windows and doors were chosen to merge the house with the natural environment. The play between solid surfaces and glazing, wall and void, light and dark helped create dynamic interplay between indoors and outside. Inside, monochromatic walls provide an illusion of much larger spaces. Because the views and interaction of indoors to out was a primary focus of the design, some traditional elements such as the upper cabinet storage were reconsidered. A large walk-in pantry was built to house the refrigerator, dishes, appliances, and food. A pared-down approach to finishes and geometry was budget friendly and helped to maintain a consistent design framework.

The exterior was a complete redo. The remodeler replaced all of the wrap around stone at the bottom of the structure, re-bricked the home in its entirety, added a balcony over the main door and rebuilt the garage.

The dining area opens to the view a small deck and the pond below via a 9' wide pocked door. Both sides of the dining space can be fully opened to the site. Inspired by local fishing shacks and wharf buildings dotting the coast of Maine, this retreat interweaves large glazed openings with simple taut-skinned New England shingled cottages. This skin is incised to open views to the sea beyond and relies on light steel framing and thin braces to preserve the simple forms eroded toward sweeping views. If you just need a quick revamp, look at your cement and pavers – these can split and crack over time; and repairing or replacing them can do wonders for your street appeal, especially if it’s a large area like your driveway. Plants, garden paths or low walls can can also add structure to your front yard. Light up your home with sufficient outdoor lighting to make walking up to the front door easy at night. You could use bollard lights along your entry path, or replace tiny wall sconces with statement pendant lighting at the entrance or on your verandah. Decorative elements such as house numbers, mailboxes and doormats will also add character.
