Comments (15)[houzz=] Here is another that uses the corner well. This also will help offset the lack of symmetry on the range wall as well. Your cabinet maker would need to work out all the measurements. The base drawers to the right of the range may need to be reduced in size to be the same as the ones on the left, which will also help balance the wall. This tall unit to the left of the range will help to balance the large pantry on the right. Where the below picture does not show it, you would have room to place a small matching wall cabinet to the left of the corner tower to balance and to balance out the space between the window. Then you can still have some type of unit to the left of the sink with the appliance garage, but it would not need to be quite as wide and would give some space next to the sink. Look at this more and see what you think. There are some very unique features to your plan. A very high level of customization and much thought has gone into it. It is going to be beautiful. Comments (121)I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. Comments (17)Lighting - pendants over the servery bench should be another feature that complements your chosen kitchen surfaces. So whilst I love the copper pendants in picture 1.. They could work depending on the rest of your decor and would be a highlight in a neutral white/timber kitchen = Good! If you choose copper you would complement it with a couple of copper bench top items. These are beautiful! (I collect copper because I love it, my kitchen pendants are silver, I renovated to sell in the next 3-5 years) You will see a picture starting to form in your mind and there is nothing wrong with making a statement with your lighting. I found that when I wasn't sure I would get a very strong sense of what was right and what was wrong for a space, then common sense or passion would determine the outcome! Here are another couple that might work, look her on Houzz under lighting, search pendants, then have fun looking!Timber tones with black or white to complement your cabinets... or Statement white pendants for a bit of quirky fun! Your personality can be reflected in your lighting and accessories creating that point of difference from the predictable white on timber look. Comments (13)These houses were designed to look good from the street, regardless of what the orientation was for the Sun. Everything depends on your budget and how far your prepared to go. A friend's house in Queenstown faced the street, the toilet and bathroom had the best view of the lake and the Sun. They got a house removal Coy in, jacked it up put it on the truck drove out and turned it around and reconnected all the services. It then faced the North and West great views and warmth, doubled its value in 3 days!. I replaced my storage water cylinder with a outside gas one, picked up enormous space in our laundry. Another tip is to draw up your "dream" plan, then overlay it over the existing and see what you can really do, your then not influenced by what is already there, and often get a much better insight and removed from the existing. 8 years agoI agree to wait a bit before making decisions. The layout is not great, but sometimes it brings out creativity to have to work with with what you have. Most of us cannot afford a gut job. It is hard to tell from pictures distance from one thing to another. I also have limited wall counter space. I bought a smallish "island" to give me the prep space I needed, so I understand why the island is there. If there is at least 36 inches around it (preferably 42inches) it will be OK.
One very inexpensive change would be to paint the walls. I have a creamy beige with just enough tint to give a nice contrast with my white trim. If you like more color, a light blue or green/blue.
Oak is not the best wood to paint. It can work and there are many people with before and after picks online. The grain does show through and I've heard mixed results on how the paint holds up over time. However, I did see new oak cabinets that had some sort of paint of glaze on them at a Parade Home recently. They were a grey/blue and looked rather rustic - the design of the whole house was farmhouse rustic. If you think you might like that look, consider having it done, possibly to new doors if you wanted a different door style, and the cabinet frames also. If you feel a little bold, navy or red can be mixed with keeping some of the oak natural. Add some knobs and pulls.
To decrease the amount of oak, consider taking down the upper cabinets around the stove and over the dishwasher. I have been seeing a lot of kitchens lately with little to no upper cabinets. Put up a modern stainless T vent hood or cool metal hood, or if you keep the cabinets and paint, a wood hood. A hood adds a touch of charm and character - but this would require relocating the microwave - and that might not be feasible. The cabinet above the counter next to the fridge could be retrofitted with a microwave shelf and either wine rack or open shelving above. You would probably want to replace the cabinet above the dishwasher with some shelving to hold everyday dishes because it is so handy to the dishwasher.
