Thanks all - our belongings arrive this week so I will have a go at transforming the space with what we have then search for new things to add. We have quite a bit of art with strong yellow colors and also a Tibetian Chest with yellows and greens. Thanks again!

Thank you everyone for your comments. We live outside Christchurch, and the house was badly damaged in the quakes here. The post-quake rebuild process could safely be described as slightly chaotic, and the house company I am using are located some distance away (like on the North Island), which is why discussion with the architect has been - em - less than optimal. The architect threw something at me to get me out of my comfort zone I think and this is what's freaking me out! I think the windows on the east side are to come (no reason for them not being there), and probably a skylight in the kitchen roof. The section of land is narrow and steep, (this is a historic port town and with access from the south (where the view is); there is no parking other than on the street (south). Patricia - the laundry doesn't sit right with me either! Looks a bit like it's been glued on the side of the hosue. And it is too small as it is to store coats, shoes etc. This is the access to the back garden - thus the door (also means muddy boots can be dumped when we come in!). Entering a house through a living room is very common over here, especially where space is at a premium (small section, small house footprint).

The first thing I require each of my clients to do before even starting the design layout is to choose their appliances. Your kitchen designer will need the manufacturer's specifications to know what size to make the cabinets to accommodate them. Be aware that there is required distances needed around and island, typically 36" up to 48" depending on placements of appliances. This will dictate the size and shape of the island. Clean lines, simplicity, innovative materials like glass countertops, exotic woods or Italian veneer slab doors, flip or lift up doors can add unexpected touches to a modern/ contemporary space. Here are some photos of one of my favorite Euro Modern kitchen I did for one of my clients not long ago.

Our clients came to us with a kitchen that hadn't been touched since the early 70s and required a complete renovation which included opening it up to the dining and lounge areas to create an open living plan with great flow to the exterior. The home also was surrounded by stunning views that the clients wanted to maximise. Before: The main working bench faced out to the view, and was on the large island, with a porcelain bench being a hard-wearing durable choice. This was combined with a granite feature benchtop which provided a focal point as you walked into the space, and played with different heights to break up the large surfaces. Extra storage in the form of toe kick drawers were added to the design, and storage was maximised to full height. After: Corners are notoriously tricky storage areas, and getting easy access to these requires a good product. My favourite is the Hafele Le Mans unit and in this kitchen project it provides a great alternative solution to having to reach into those dark spaces. If you need some extra space to stash your cash....hide the cookies from the grandies, or storage over sized platters, a hidden toekick draw is the answer. The Blum system is smooth running and can take a good amount of weight. After: The theme for the space was industrial luxury, and the black cabinetry with the aged brass handles and tapware created a moody, yet time-honoured aesthetic.
