Need ideas for Kitchen Island in new modern kitchen. Last detail...Help!! (please)

My last 2 details in the kitchen are a fan (bladeless just ordered) and an Island. I want to be able to have at least 2 seats and a work area. I also wanted to get a little more storage. Everything I find is more like a cart and I want it to look and function as both a work space and seating (with an overhang to put stools under). If you have any ideas/photos I would be sooooo grateful!
PS: I don't have original designs because I originally had a peninsula and simply swung it to the wall and ordered additional upper cabinets when I realized I could have a much better space with it open.
From the dishwasher to the end of the Quartz is 69" and the available width is about 65-70 inches wide.
The cabinets are Thomasville (Dove Grey color) and the counter-top is quartz (Merengo color)

Comments (17)Like your space and choice of green. Like the green in the kitchen you referred us to. Looks a little darker or less yellow than one you did with Photoshop? You have the same issue as many of us, for one reason or another we end up trying to blend two disparate styles. The couches say man's room, formal, brown wood to me. Your room, kitchen and fireplace say much lighter in colors , style and spirit! If you try to blend the two you will end up with neither. Your purchases to go with the couches will just add to things pushing you in a direction you don't appear to want to go! I'd suggest you find some sofa covers, or even bed coverlets if you can't get covers to put over the couches. I like the colors in the fireplace. Comments (12)You have a good nice project planned here, with your kitchen now a part of large living space. Here, though, are some cautions and suggestions. Your extra-large peninisula counter and full window wall over the sink seem to be features that you like and want - but they also cause some problems with this plan. If two people are ever in the kitchen, one will be trapped there. And even for one, the peninsula forces an irritating hike around it to the table for serving and clean-up. Table and array of counter stools are uncomfortably close together, creating congestion especially when occupied. And while your back wall may well contain a fridge, wall ovens, pantry and cook-top, it would just barely do so - and leave no other space at all for counter. This, together with your nice bank of windows on the outside wall leave no space at all for upper cabinet dish storage. I agree with Laurie that an island here would be much preferable. I would put the sink and dishwasher on an island, with fewer stools, and some mid-height dish storage - letting gatherings of more than two or three enjoy the table in a conversational arrangement instead of facing away from the room in a row. I would also minimize the window array a bit, and extend the kitchen toward the dining table window a foot or so - and put the wall ovens at this end of the "L" - with no side wall at the left. This would distribute your countertop space more happily among your work stations, allow for some upper cabinet storage, and make the kitchen feel more part of the nice big room, instead of separated from it by the peninsula. Comments (15)The first thing I require each of my clients to do before even starting the design layout is to choose their appliances. Your kitchen designer will need the manufacturer's specifications to know what size to make the cabinets to accommodate them. Be aware that there is required distances needed around and island, typically 36" up to 48" depending on placements of appliances. This will dictate the size and shape of the island. Clean lines, simplicity, innovative materials like glass countertops, exotic woods or Italian veneer slab doors, flip or lift up doors can add unexpected touches to a modern/ contemporary space. My town house unit is under complete exterior re-cladding works, prompting quite substantial interior makeover (i.e installtion of ducted air con, replacing wall to wall carpet with timber upstairs, and tiles in open space downstaris, replacing creamy wall paper will be replaced with neutral white paint. So my green kitchen with creamy formica counter (bench) top should go. I don't hate green simply had egounh of it after long 15 yeras! My small U shape kitchen is due for complete makeover, I think! I'll probably go with new cabinets (lower one for microwave) up to the ceiling, when move fridge at the end I'll go with panel with matching colour up to the ceiling, expanding counter top on the other side to the fridge. I guess that removal of the cupboard can be compesated with extension of the counter top so we can fit 3x drawer underneath and cabinets up to the ceiling can provide some useful storage space. 11 years agoGreat ideas on here! What about something like this? You obviously wouldn't need a stove imbedded but this creates a central piece in the kitchen. It also has storage. You could go a little smaller and place stools around it.

8 years agoThe overhang on your island should be 16"+ to be comfortable for seating (12" min) and you should have at least 3' clear (preferably 42" -48") to your adjacent wall cabinets in all directions. Typical cabinets are 25" deep including the doors and 3/4" more if door panel(s) are used on the back/seating side. Therefore the overall depth of your island would be 42" and the length is based on the space available. Do you have room for this? I agree with comments that a contrasting, darker color on the island would be most appealing. Here's an idea from my site:

We bought an inexpensive, small cart and had the granite company cut us a top for it to match our counters.
