This is a beautiful room. Although I am a MCM/Scandinavian design fanatic, I like both the furniture and color.

I suspect that the circular mirror might be too large for the space. I suggest that you print out the view that you posted, probably print in black and white. Then try out different configurations and sizes of objects above the server. Are you sold on the idea of a mirror? What will it reflect? Have you considered an arrangement of plates and platters instead?

Please show the other walls of this room to generate more comments.

Why do you want a mirror, to reflect light? I think art would be better for that wall.

Your server appears about 42/ 48 inches wide. If so hang the 42 inch mirror! Your eye will read the server and armchairs below as a generous unit, it will be fine. Before you do this, remove the plant stand, center the server and proceed. Another picture of the whole space would be nice.

Thank you for your prompt response Yvonne! I really appreciate your expert insight! I thought of a mirror because I don't have one in that room. Maybe the mirror is an easy way out. I don't know if I have the confidence to go with an arrangement of plates and platters because I'm afraid I won't pull it off although I do have some pretty pieces. I have an oil in bright colors that is 24" x 30" that I would like to use. Here are some additional photos of the room and the hall and living room opposite that it will reflect, and that oil. Any ideas

joanaharvey you could always lean a large mirror ( still fasten it to the wall though ) on top of the buffet. Beautiful orchids on the buffet would look gorgeous in your room. See rendering below.

You already have several mirrored sconces. Use art over the buffet for color and interest.

Then a pair of buffet lamps.

I especially like the painting over the buffet. It would be a focal point with it's color and the gold frame. Your room is beautiful and sophisticated, I like that the painting is bright and modern, not an historical reference. It gives just a bit of juxtaposition to the room, which makes the room more interesting.

My thinking was to try switching the tall cabinet with the console - putting a chair each side of the console. Then hang painting over the console. Worth a try.

Usually mirrors are best where they can reflect something beautiful. A mirror in a dining room would tend to display people chewing food. I'd use your oil painting - it's lovely and would truly enhance the room IMO.

Yep. I agree with the art suggestion. You can still do a ginger jar and an orchid on the server which would bring the art visually closer to the furniture. Lovely room.

Lots of great suggestions here for your dining room. I just want to add that it is a beautiful room--great architectural features (molding, wainscoting) and classic traditional furniture. Your home looks terrific--such a nice change from most of the transitional, MCM, eclectic hodgepodges usually shown.

Thank you all again! I have been trying for a traditional look that is not too serious or stuffy. I have no problem with a mirror reflecting people eating and having a good time but I also like the idea of an oil painting there. I'll see what I can find. I don't know why I didn't think of putting that old footbath on the table. I like that idea, and I'll bring that Chinese vase out of the corner. Thank you all so much!!

No matter how beautiful and cool your things are, if they aren't respectful to the scale of the space, it's just not cool. Having looked at your pictures, I am wondering how wide your china cabinet it. Perhaps you could place it on that longer wall, giving it vertical height, and then flank it with two beautiful medallions or artwork. The server could transfer to the smaller wall and you could put the beautiful art piece above it. It seems like it would be a better balance for the space since the china cabinet is more substantial in size and structure. That is a long wall and needs to be addressed correctly. What a beautiful home! You have great taste.
