How do I know whether to get a round or rectangular area rug for our living room/great room? Also, what size? Do the front feet of the sofa and facing chaise sit on the rug?
In this particular room, we used the rug to add color and define a seating area together in a large space with beige wall to wall carpeting. We chose not to have the feet of any of the furniture on the rug- not something I normally do. But in this case it worked and filled the large room better with the large scale furniture. Generally, I follow the premise of all front feet on or all feet off.
As for the size of the rug and the shape, that all depends on the size and shape of the room. And your personal preference. If you have an existing room with furniture, you could arrange your furniture and then measure to see what size would fit best with the feet of the sofa and chairs on the rug. Rectangular rugs are the classic shape which I tend to select, but round often works in a square space such as a dining nook, kitchen or entry.
A beautiful rug can be an investment that often grounds the room literally. So pick the best quality in your price range and get the best rug pad appropriate for the surface the rug will be laying on. Be certain to ask about the care instructions and the wearability of the fibers used to make the rug. Factors such as red wine, coffee, pets and children need to be considered- all potential cleaning issues, as well as settings to be used when vacuuming. Working with a professional designer or a reputable rug salesperson to obtain good advice would insure that you will enjoy your selection for years to come.
