Picking Granite
Were trying to pick our granite and would like some input. The long piece of wood is the cabinet color, Tile is busy 3rd photo, wood slab is the 14' live edge table that is dining and island. the switch plate represents the hammered copper sink. I like Pic # 1 BUT busy floor with busy granite might be a little much. Any thoughts

Comments (121)I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. Looking at the photo you sent the different cabinet heights , and all the objects on the stove wall are very busy . Your modern house is wanting a cleaner , simple look. I would lower the small cabinets so that the top is at the same height as the others in the room. And put doors on , that will hide the clutter. Next I would do a tile backsplash above the stove , up to the same height. The whole kitchen will be pulled together by the continuous top line. There is a small light wood cabinet with baskets in the foreground . I would paint it white , or the same dark accent color of the cabinets you have. Comments (40)We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. Comments (77)I won't bother with lattice, barrels are partially obscured from the street by fencing and if I put it up I would have to work around the lattice in order to turn the valves for water. If I can just make better use of collected water I'll be happy. We are at the end of our growing season so I should be cleaning up the garden and putting it to bed for the winter, just can't seem to get motivated. We had our first frost last week. Usually, our average early frost date is 1 November. I got almost no produce from garden this year, but there is always next year. Chookchook2 I've seen some of those decorative metal panels and they are gorgeous, sure hope your budget will allow you to get some before too long. Most of our state has been on fire for a good part of the summer. The closest is across the river from us and they have been battling it for almost a month. Some friends have had to evacuate repeatedly. We've only been concerned once, a small grass fire on our side of the river on a day we had wind gusts up to 65mph. Fortunately, it was put out quickly. Australia and New Zealand have both sent firefighters to help with the blazes. I can't begin to tell you how appreciative we are. The closest fire was fought for almost a week by local volunteers only as there were no other resources available. They were all on other fires. The Army National Guard (reserve troops) were called out to help with support duties and for the first time ever the federal Department of Natural Resources (DNR) asked for civilian volunteers to help with non firefighting tasks, cutting fire breaks, moving supplies etc....See More

This would be the kitchen table very raw it matches the mantle over the fireplace and the very solid teak root coffee table. The couch and chairs will be a weathered brown leather. So pretty rustic

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoMud, I love that you do your own thing, but you must be having a gut check or you wouldn't be here asking for opinions. Busy floor + busy granite = too much pattern. Live edge table/counters + hammered copper sink = texture overload. Too much pattern + texture overload = hard to live with/visually unpleasant design.
Which of the assembled pieces is the must have? Sounds like the table is your true love, so embrace it and build the rest of the design using quieter elements. You could get away with the copper sink too, but let the floor and countertops be subtler so your beautiful sink, wood and leather can be appreciated.
There are absolutely spectacular, showstopping gantry faucets from Waterstone that work well with your rustic design...available in living finishes that patina with age like your copper sink will. A faucet like this would be beautiful and special jewelry for your kitchen, but become invisible alongside overwhelming patterns and textures. I mention this to point out that you don't have to pack all the bling into the permanent design elements. Hardware, lighting, fabric choices...all make vital contributions to special spaces. Leave room for them:

Paired with wood floors, your copper sink and the live edge elements, I think it would be elegant and still fit your aesthetic. If you need more bling, copper accent tiles incorporated into a ceramic tile backsplash.
