Kitchen looking a bit sterile - splashback ideas

Hello, I'm looking for splashback ideas for my white kitchen, the whole length of the run is 4.6m. It's a white gloss kitchen and it's north facing. I do love my new kitchen but it does look a bit sterile, I don't think I want to have a glass splashback as there would just be too much reflection going on. I found some concrete style tiles which I think would give a good contrast ( ignore the sizes in the photo, they are just sampes ), however with the colour being grey, is this make going to make it look more sterile and cold?

I don't think it makes sense to just have a piece of splashback behind the hob and the sink only, I think it needs to go all the way along the back but being quite a long run of cabinets it's tricky to find something that's a bit more interesting but not in your face and over powering

Any thoughts or wonderful ideas?

What do you have on the floor? Is copper an option for colour, just bring a little warmth in via tile

Hi Man About The House, thanks for your suggestion, the copper does look great in the photos,

Actually the 2nd tile I uploaded does have a copper tint to it although it looks more silver in the photo.

Do you think having 4.6m of copper would look too much? It definitely looks like a statement, I wish I had the courage to go bold!

I would do a glass splash back [ this can be painted in your color choice to suit the decor ] - taking from the bench top up to the bottom of the range-hood on the wall of the stove. The window is beautiful and I would give anything to have them in my kitchen. I would probably paint OR stain and apply marine grade vanish to the would so that any moisture would not be able to ruin the wood. I would also put herbs or flowers there. Could it be made into a servery for outside maybe ???

Your layout for you kitchen looks really good and would fit well with the mixture of black and white cabinetry. With the lament bench top, we would suggest melamine (entry level cabinetry) or acrylic bench top, which can come in high gloss feature or matt. The matt surface would go lovely with your choice of bench top, and acrylic is also a affordable cabinetry material. Below are some examples of how Reno4u has incorporated both black and white cabinetry together, without making it to dominantly dark. Thanks courtney. it's all finished and we love it. We chose a white glass back splash which really helps to brighten up the space. On a sunny day it's so bright I pull the blinds down lol! the photo looks alot colder than it is too. It's taken on my phone so not the best.

Hi Helen. I thought I might share photos of my kitchen- which happens to be on a farm- as the layout is very similar to yours. We planned to do white subway tiles (and still might as we are just doing the bathrooms with the tiles and will see what we have left...) but used clear coated cement board as a temporary measure and find it quite serviceable as we haven't finished the kitchen. We did the open shelves first and then added bits and pieces of shelving afterwards. These are white washed Douglas Fir. The shelves just below the temporary ply bench top (going to do polished concrete benchtops later) are lined with galvanised tin. The lazy Susan in the corner cupboards are really handy! Hope these photos might be of interest. It's a very serviceable kitchen work in progress!

I put the link to sheet metal company above, I think copper will look great with white and a wood floor. It doesn't have to be in your face shiny copper, burnished copper, aged copper, etc. Here's the link again Metalsheets.co.uk I like the aged copper the most.

I would be looking for a contrast colour as opposed to similar colours. I think a bright orange would look nice.

This is the exact colour scheme of my kitchen that will be fitted in soon, I also have the same dilemma.
I’ll be going for an upstand of the same material as the worktop and adding colour with kitchen accessories, wall art, etc. However I do like the cooper contrast with the grey. Would love to see your finished design.
Maybe paint one wall in a plum or teal colour or use statement wallpaper. Also wood really warms up a room, a wooden oak table would look great! Best of luck.

Be brave and go bold, the copper will be amazing. I think you might be disappointed if you go for something too neutral, it will look fine but it won't lift the space in the same way. If you do want to go for something less bold, I would make sure the finish contrasts the units (like the samples you have) stay away from cool greys and cream.

Also accessories can do a lot to warm up space, not sure what is in the rest of the room but plants, lights, art, rugs, window finishes etc etc can make a huge difference.

I agree wood, or natural stone. I wouldn't use anything grey, I think it would look even colder. Wood, if oiled could be practical and look beautiful.

A glass backsplash could be painted any colour you like, navy blue for example?

Or why not have an encaustic style patterned tile to soften the hard modern look of the cabinets?

Or a geometric tile?

Some great ideas everyone, thank you so much! Freedom Construction and colour happy, the wood idea looks great bit what sort of wood are you thinking of? Wood planks, laminate wood look, wood panel, wood tiles? Or are there special ones for splashbacks?

I agree that those copper tones would add real warmth to your kitchen. I’ve found a few images of copper coloured tiles which would have a similar effect, although I love @Man Abouts images!

What sort of wooden floor you have at the moment? Perhaps use same type but different pattern. They could be installed horizontally, vertically, random lengths or something like herringbone.

I would consider engineered wood or even wood but not laminate. What your thoughts?

I had a client who used pennies to make a splash back ! Looked fab ! Was years ago - so I expect it’s been replaced now - but I always thought it was a fun way of adding warmth ! ( might be a bugger to clean though ??)

Ooo how did they manage to seal it oneplan? I’ve seen it for floors where obviously you can pour something on top but not a vertical surface like that!

Hi,

First you have to prepared mould (flat and level) assuming after taking measurements or creating template. Then you place pennies in and pour epoxy resin. Then fit.
Time consuming and expensive but worth it.

You can have up stands in wood ( although not advisable behind a hob ), but a splash back is not really a good idea, the constant changes in heat can make the wood warp and discolour and of course it's a fire risk . Away from the hob is a great idea, but you would need a different material directly behind it.

We're redoing our kitchen shortly and are having these copper leaf tiles from Original Style as our backsplash - we couldn't find a made to measure copper leaf glass backsplash maker and pure copper sheeting I didn't want as I don't want the patina effect as it ages (or the upkeep!).
We've seen these tiles and they're gorgeous - Original Style have a great range of other similar ones too. They can be cut carefully with professional help although we're just placing them vertically all the way along.

Some lovely ideas here including yours.

I like the geometric tiles which are popular at the moment too with a dark grout.
Whichever you go for remember how you dress the kitchen will make a difference.

We have a similar design going in next month and it looks sterile but then there will be choice items on the back run which will add warmth and character .... I hope?!??

I love all the input and creative ideas !!.. But I agree with Man About, the copper with a patina would definitely get my vote, an injection of colour definitley needed !..
