looks like it could be a walk in wardrobe for the master bedroom or move Micah in to the playroom and use Micah's bedroom as wiw and use the long narrow space as a library reading room but where is the toilet for the kids' rooms?

Thanks for responding @oklouise! The kids bathroom is the one shown on the plan in blue. The master has an ensuite next to "stairs". As the extra room it is not connected to the master bedroom (middle room) I don't think it will work as a WIR, and the robe we have is big enough. We had considered making it a library / reading space but we already have that outside Micah's room. Also, because of the mezzanine it is not particularly quiet there.

Rose, I remember your post from ages ago. Are you installing a new toilet in the children's bathroom?
Just keep it as a empty room if you are gutting it. It will then evolve to its best use over time.

If you don’t need the space then just leave it for the time being. Don’t try and force it, I assume from your comments now and back in January you are doing the Reno for yourself.

Does it have to be separated from the hall for structural reasons? If not I’d have the space open incorporating the hall which gives it flexibility as multi purpose. Extra adaptable space comes in handy as kids morph into grown ups.

Like bigreader said, does it need to be enclosed? If if was open it could be a lovely sitting area with a couple of deep armchairs - a little nook to escape to

@3DA Design Drafting and 3D Visuals I was wondering about that. I was worried it might be too small, but that is definitely an idea on the list!

I think it needs photo's for us to really visualise it , and even work out why it is there . Has the upstairs been added later than the downstairs ?

Is that a door on the 'slope' ( it's not clearly marked ) , is there only 1 smallish window , can more windows be easily added , and what is the view like ( rural or the local refuse centre or the hot neighbours or the elderly neighbours hahaha ?

It may be worth just filling with plants , or a room almost like the old enclosed verandas , or a kids playroom ( yes , I know , but . . . . . . ) , or a bowling alley , or a darts area -- but more info/pics would be really helpful .

@dreamer @Kate Yes, we put a toilet in the kids bathroom. That is an interesting idea of keeping it empty and seeing what it gets used for. We are planning on replacing the carpet upstairs and so we wanted to figure out if we are keeping that room or opening it up to the hall but I can see the benefit of putting it off and seeing what naturally happens.

@bigreader @geluka We definitely could open it up and that's what I've been mulling over. We could put in a window seat and leave it as a bit of hang out spot. But we don't need it for that, and also it's pretty noisy because it's open to below. But that's probably one of the best ideas so far.

@User Good questions! Basically every room in this house was added at a different time, the whole place is a hodge podge. Previously it was three bathrooms in a row for absolutely no apparent reason. We can add new windows with relative ease, and we can change where the door is, or even remove the wall if we want. The views are stunning as it is a country property. It's interesting you mention that idea of turning it into a verandah. I'e been trying to find out if it would be possible to convert it into a balcony or something but I have had zero luck on finding any info on the practicality of turning an inside space into an outdoor space.

Unsure as to how far down the road you have gone, but probably would be better to have made the master zone to the far left and utilise that "leftover" space as either robe or ensuite. Your requirements should drive the configuration of spaces, as opposed to the reverse. It makes more sense to have master zoned separately with secondary bedrooms zoned together with associated amenties/bathroom, play area etc

I agree Paul, but in the original post, in January 2020, rose ellis, was quite adamant that due to the middle bedroom being their personal choice for master, apparently that could not happen. Seems a waste to remove one bathroom to create another in the middle of the house. Plumbing and numerous extra expenses.
And then have no use for the space from the removed bathroom.

@Paul Di Stefano Design @dreamer You are both completely correct - based on the floorplans alone, changing the left room to the master is the obvious choice. Unfortunately, the room on the left has only high windows and the roof below ends part way up the wall. Whereas the master bedroom has floor to ceiling windows with incredible views. The bathrooms we removed had nonfunctional plumbing which had to be removed for hygiene and safety reasons, so it made sense from a cost point of view to put in an ensuite in the existing master bedroom. But it is an absolute bummer on the zoning side of things, agreed!

Actually, if you really have no need of the space, I would get a structure engineer there, and cut the whole thing off, make it a stunning bridge.

I agree with bigreader and geluka. If you don't need it for anything, open it up, get a nice artwork or two, or plants, and a comfy seat.
