What would you do with the exterior of my 1980 block house.

80 cement block house, brown aluminium window frames, next project, I am to paint the windows matt black ( can't afford new ones) Already painted the trim (its a black green grey blend) am considering painting all the block black, house is 2 story at the back (the block has an uneven surface to look like mud brick) and looks a little depressing- thoughts recommendations ideas please
here are some before and after pics.Last week I turfed the top area ( it was previously and old shed and mud driveway. I'm to lay a meadow wildflower turf bed on the porch roof to attract bees and soften the look. (last pic is a before)

Comments (24)If you use masonry paint, we could head in a warm greige direction for all of it - not so yellow . .. something that can give you a bit more contrast against the white windows and trim - even 40 does a lot for us . . . what about a blue green gray? Comments (7)I agree that you should take down the trellis but be aware that you'll probably need to extend your decking rail along that side in order to enclose the deck for building code purposes. If that's more of an expense than you're willing to incur right now, consider at least taking it down to the same height as the rest of your deck and putting a top railing across it. You could then put in some foundation plantings that would climb up and cover the fact that it runs in a different direction than the front of your deck. If I'm looking at it correctly, your gate gives you access to your front door from your drive way. Am I right? In that case, I think your gate should stay where it is. I agree with flair lighting that a new light is in order over your entry. If you like the idea of a motion light, they make decorative outdoor fixtures with motion lights built in. Your fence would definitely look nice painted a lighter color. Right now, as flair said, it's a bit unwelcoming. If you're painting your metal roof, take your house and trim colors from there to coordinate. You could definitely paint your scalloped trim a different color than the house. Matching it to whatever trim color you choose would look great. Do you use the steps from your deck to access your yard? If not, I would consider removing them and closing in that portion of the deck as well. If you do use them, I would add a hand rail for safety purposes. Comments (5)Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely try to attach rounded tiles where I can to make it more Spanish. Also love the idea of attaching Spanish style tiles to fronts of steps etc. I will definitely do bright contrasting front door, and I really like the window flowers idea to break up all the walls. Landscaping is my strength, so got that sorted, and will begin that first. There is too much focus currently on parking spaces, and not enough on outdoor living. Comments (10)Without knowing any more info , I'd say its near impossible for anyone but you to know what colour/s to choose -- do you want the house to blend in but have its own style , or do you want it to stand out ? What colours are your main furniture items and even kitchen etc ? For xxample , if keeping the beige walls , how about doing the eves and gutters and garage door in a tangy ( bright , but not glaring ) orange -- this would work with the existing colours and not require a complete repaint . BUT if your kitchen was mainly various shades of , say , green and teal , and your lounge suite and duvet covers were mainly blue hues , that may 'feel' funny , clashing with the exterior ? Of course , blue and beige exterior may not work with the brown aluminium , as youve recognised . Another option ( a bit hard to tell from the pictures ) is that a light grey ( repaint the beige ) with mid-charcoal base boards may work with the brown aluminium , then a bright colour on the gutters and front and rear doors to suit -- anything from sea blue to bright yellow , orange , red , even white or off-white would probably work ....See More

3 years agoIt does look dull and depressing. Before painting bricks add some colour. Flowering plants picture on wall, cushions. Outdoor rug under swing.

I love what you have done so far, love the black, to bring bees and butterflies into your garden plant the gorgeous Buddleia, they come in a range of colours that would look great with your house, add a water bowl, bird feeder and you can sit in your lovely chair and enjoy your beautiful house and garden.
