Thanks Orangecamera. It's still a work in progress and mud everywhere Sorry we did look at having the steps' off set' but it didn't seem to go with only three steps and a small area. And about the zen well the cats are doing that for us much to our disappointment (it's still like a litter box to them). We went to the garden supply place still not knowing what kind of stones we were getting. We stood in front of all the bins (there where many). We even looked at mixing some. The grey stones had a bin more the size we wanted but we ended up getting the golden fleck. It was a little smaller, which was a shame, the bigger ones were so mixed in their grading it looked too messy. So this is what we finished up with. It was seagardens that got me thinking away from grey and nwduck mentioning the drainage. So this has really helped. Also everyone seem to think the wooden steps needed to go a lot lower. Next it's figuring out where the large river stones should go

I agree that you should take down the trellis but be aware that you'll probably need to extend your decking rail along that side in order to enclose the deck for building code purposes. If that's more of an expense than you're willing to incur right now, consider at least taking it down to the same height as the rest of your deck and putting a top railing across it. You could then put in some foundation plantings that would climb up and cover the fact that it runs in a different direction than the front of your deck. If I'm looking at it correctly, your gate gives you access to your front door from your drive way. Am I right? In that case, I think your gate should stay where it is. I agree with flair lighting that a new light is in order over your entry. If you like the idea of a motion light, they make decorative outdoor fixtures with motion lights built in. Your fence would definitely look nice painted a lighter color. Right now, as flair said, it's a bit unwelcoming. If you're painting your metal roof, take your house and trim colors from there to coordinate. You could definitely paint your scalloped trim a different color than the house. Matching it to whatever trim color you choose would look great. Do you use the steps from your deck to access your yard? If not, I would consider removing them and closing in that portion of the deck as well. If you do use them, I would add a hand rail for safety purposes. Like your house! I think the verticals in the window on the left are vertical blinds - get rid of these - they are very dating. Paint the horizontal safety bars to match your other window frames. I think the house just lacks privacy - and this then necessitates curtains and blinds at all the windows, giving the house a closed off look. I would get rid of all the very solid and 60s era conifer shrubs and replace with softer planting and one or two taller trees. Perhaps a fence or hedge to provide privacy so those windows could be opened up to the sun and garden. Or you could plant a row of spaced standard trees (fluffy heads on trimmed trunks) (eg robinia, or a weeping standard poplar or willow) you'd only need about 5 along the street frontage, creeper round that letterbox, a few pretty plants next the house. Then open the blinds and curtains. You could add a screened courtyard outside the glazed area on the left. Talk to your local garden shop for ideas. I cant tell whether the walls are brown brick or brown Summerhill stone (thats those rough concrete bricks, also very 60s). My house is Summerhill stone and has been painted cream - looks fine and certainly removes the 60s look. Hope this gives you some ideas - good luck with your new house.
