The kitchen misses chairs around the breakfast table, and we have a big rattan pendant coming for above the table. Only in the kitchen downlights are planned. All other downlights will be removed and replaced by pendants and wall lights.

I’d remove the table attached to the kitchen. Then I’d run the dining table parallel to the kitchen bench. This allows you to maximise the fireplace by being able to sit front of it with a small sitting area and remove wasted space.

yes I agree with big reader. The attached table is overly restrictive and not very functional.

we have a double sided fireplace and in the kitchen/dining side I have 4 armchairs centered around a round coffee table. It's a great space.

We tried to have a table parallel to the kitchen island but its just too far to run around all the time with 3 kids. purposely we added the breakfast table to the corner of the island, even planned the drawers accordingly, the ones close by have all cutlery and glasses etc. so I don’t need to run around all the time. besides we just got it custom made so I wouldn’t want to throw out the money we spent. So I need to find a solution around it.

It’s also the table we use every day. The other table is supposed to be the formal dining table. The space in the middle is actually good as the kids (3 boys) use it to run their scooters and play there games there without that I need to be worried that they run into something. but I see the point of the lost space. However, that’s kind of the pathway from the entrance door to the kitchen so a dining table there wasn’t looking nice coming from the entrance door as you were looking right into a dining table in the middle of the way. And moving it closer to the island it’s blocking the view onto the kitchen island which is the feature in this room.

I’d build in a buffet against the side wall column, proportioning it to balance the space to windows and fireplace,
Add a bulkhead along the dining table to depth of beam to hang lights from. I’d go wider than beam and not full length of table.can do similar over kitchen table,

Not sure why the solid external wall in dining area. Going with my buffet built in against column. Add another colour to left end to match then a window to balance the other windows and bring more ligh5 to this end of room.

What is now the dining room used to be the kitchen (before picture below) that’s why it has no window. We won‘t be able to add a window there it would be far to expensive (double story house and behind the wall is water Tank etc). Need to do without window.

Have you considered having the dining table running along the space with the windows. Have marked in blue in this pic. Though it should be centred across in that space 😊. Think it fits. That makes sense with kitchen access, also your timber table near the bench would be handy for food ferrying or serving when entertaining.

I don’t see the point of built ins near the fireplace, because I think your needs will change once the kids get a bit older and you won’t need the empty space near the kitchen bench. For now, you could have seating for good chats near the fire (as opposed to around tv), as it looks like it will be tv on the other side. I’d make the most of area for now and reassess later. Awesome reno though so far. V exciting and I’d love to see it as it progresses. Good luck!

Also, in regard to the timber table adjoining kitchen table I think it would be totally different with other chairs. The white ones you gave atm are definitely dining and don’t suit. Wondered if you noticed this post, has similar benches with stools/chairs.

Hi Mandy, absolutely. That’s super old chairs from our previous house which we just use until we have found the right fit.
We are currently even consider building two benches as, I think it looks much better. On the other side we will have the 3 kids high chairs.
We will have this rattan pendant above the table

If we go for chairs I would go for something like on the pic below. But I feel like a bench or two bench fits much better, looks more tidy, minimalistic and less crowded. Especially considering the fact that we will have chairs on the opposite dining table.

Having the dining table on front of the windows like you suggested won’t be an option I think. We tried and it looks awkward especially because we won’t get a 3 Meter table in there without looking overly crowded. Additionally we were thinking dying sliding doors towards the garden there and having an outdoor lounge area. The dining table would then block access.

However we noticed that off cantering the dining table under the bulkhead doesn’t look too bad. And a solution for the dining table light could be a straight light with two suspensions left and right of the bulkhead.

I feel the path from entrance door to garden should be free without a dining table blocking the way (as bigreader suggested to run the dining table parallel to the kitchen.

Hey again, tbh I don’t like the bench seating near the kitchen table. The rattan ones might look ok. I think I’d be going for a low stool. How about you try using your dining table in the space running the other way parallel to the window, with the bench seat you have, if you like it get another bench seat the other side. Use 4 of your white chairs ie. 2 each end just to see how it looks for now. Btw what will the floor be - v curious now to see end result 👋

Tricky. What I would say is you seem to be considering what suits your family now. I reckon in a few years, definitely not several, the way kids play in your house will be totally different. You won’t need to leave such a big amount of space around the kitchen bench. That’s my experience anyway. Anyways I love what you have done. Bye 4 now.

We like to entertain and have parties so the apace in between comes handy as dancefloor 😊

But, yes, we have planned the the kitchen breakfast table as a freestanding table so we can remove it in the future. However, we love having space and don’t like to add furnitures if it isn’t really needed.

I just need to find a solution to make the dining room side work without looking to crowded and squished but still stunning. It’s so tricky

Hey Sabrina, how often will you use a 10/12 person table? If only occasionally, have you considered an extension table? It might help with your placement dilemma.
