What to do about hideous pipes over front door!!!
Hello! My first post on here asking for advice! We have a very lovely, modest (2144sf) home on the water in the California delta area. Unfortunately, we also have one of the saddest entry doors in the neighborhood. I'm looking to go from this:
to something like this (a neighbor's new front door) (but maybe a single sidelight and slightly shorter transom if needed to fit my space):
My husband and a friend will probably be doing most of the work as we don't have a ton of $ for remodel projects. Stepson is a plumber. The issue I need help with - WHAT TO DO WITH THE UGLY PIPES OVER OUR DOORWAY? I think moving them is not going to be feasible - due to cost partly but mostly due to not sure where/how it could be done. The pipes seem to be coming from the upstairs storage in the garage (left side) to a narrow space of attic in the house (right side). The attic space is small because most of house has high vaulted wood tongue-in-groove ceilings. I believe these pipes are going into the attic over about a two-foot wide space above the closet in the guest bedroom. There used to be a pergola along the walkway (left, along the garage) that went all the way across the entryway under the pipes and attached to the house on the left, but it was dilapidated, crooked and ugly, so we took it down. Unfortunately, this was part of the placement of these pipes was part of the original design as I've found two other models of our house in our little town and both have these pipes. One of the other houses with in this model brought the roofline forward and down and stuccoed over the whole thing (no access to pipes if needed and can't have a transom window in that situation). I believe the other house left the walkway pergola up and has something similar to the original door I think. I'm really wanting the transom as we have beautiful inviting vaulted ceilings I'd like to show off to welcome visitors as they enter our home and I would like to bring more natural light in. I've thought about vines? or boxing it off with something more decorative? I welcome all ideas, pictures and resources. Thank you!

Help! Not sure about house room layout, especially location of kitchen
Comments (17)Thank you everyone for your comments. We live outside Christchurch, and the house was badly damaged in the quakes here. The post-quake rebuild process could safely be described as slightly chaotic, and the house company I am using are located some distance away (like on the North Island), which is why discussion with the architect has been - em - less than optimal. The architect threw something at me to get me out of my comfort zone I think and this is what's freaking me out! I think the windows on the east side are to come (no reason for them not being there), and probably a skylight in the kitchen roof. The section of land is narrow and steep, (this is a historic port town and with access from the south (where the view is); there is no parking other than on the street (south). Patricia - the laundry doesn't sit right with me either! Looks a bit like it's been glued on the side of the hosue. And it is too small as it is to store coats, shoes etc. This is the access to the back garden - thus the door (also means muddy boots can be dumped when we come in!). Comments (39)Thanks Orangecamera. It's still a work in progress and mud everywhere Sorry we did look at having the steps' off set' but it didn't seem to go with only three steps and a small area. And about the zen well the cats are doing that for us much to our disappointment (it's still like a litter box to them). We went to the garden supply place still not knowing what kind of stones we were getting. We stood in front of all the bins (there where many). We even looked at mixing some. The grey stones had a bin more the size we wanted but we ended up getting the golden fleck. It was a little smaller, which was a shame, the bigger ones were so mixed in their grading it looked too messy. So this is what we finished up with. It was seagardens that got me thinking away from grey and nwduck mentioning the drainage. So this has really helped. Also everyone seem to think the wooden steps needed to go a lot lower. Comments (14)I would embrace the element, but I would get rid of the wood chips. I'm thinking back fist sized river rocks. Then I would get a tallish flowering tropical such as hibiscus and add a few ivy plants to grow between the rocks. Additionally, a small water feature might be nice. For me, the bigger problem with the entryway is the door. You have an obviously contemporary home, yet you have a -very- traditional door. I would want a wood door with some sort of art glass element in it. The wood would of course need to be stained to match the existing woodwork. The door will be some big bucks, but it would remain regardless of flooring changes. These two doors are not specific recommendations, but examples of the type of entry door I have in mind. Comments (6)I agree with havingfun, thicken the supports and have something growing trailing up them. I didn't even notice there was a pergola until the close up. Right now it blends in too well with the house color, consider painting it a different color. 3 years agoSince you are wanting a front door similar to your neighbours.
Could you install your new front door with transom as hoped.
Then, where the pipes are running, enclose them in a fabricated box and have high light windows above the elongated box. The high light windows matching the new front door transom.
