Help please! strange house tiling problem

I'd greatly appreciate any ideas of how we can make tiling work....
Our house has curved walls, going to the entry of a sunken lounge. We've removed ugly balustrading and timber lip with the hope of tiling right to the edge of the sunken lounge.
Our tiler has asked us to put a timber edge the whole way along for hum to butt the tiles to - BECAUSE - where the wall starts curving there is no support for the tiles. We've racked our brains, as I really don't want to put a line of timber where there should be tiles. We're wondering about removing the sheeting in the sunken part and doing the wall with a strong render....... HELP PLEASE, what would you do?
