This is our wool carpet. 17 years old and survived cat, dogs, teenagers and the odd breakfast coffee without a mark and lovely underfoot. Only reason it will be replaced is the underlay is breaking down. I think the extra initial cost is far less than needing to replace it - I haven’t know a synthetic carpet to last longer than 7 years although maybe the new ones are different?
There is also bamboo. We replaced carpets with nylon 13 years ago and no issues. My mum has bamboo which is supposed to be easier to clean and no fluff. Definitely don’t want one that will fluff a lot.
We installed mid priced, wool carpet in the bedrooms of our new place. 18 months on: we only had a little bit of fluff and only for the first few weeks; it feels wonderful underfoot; and it’s really easy to keep clean. Also, no static. There were artificial fibres that were both cheaper and more expensive. It was simply that this one ticked our boxes Friend in the industry told us:
underlay is important, don’t skimp on that
read, and trust, the label on the back, it tells you what room/traffic area it’s designed and tested for etc.
if you buy from a reputable retailer, fibre is less important than it used to be, they’ve all improved
make it clear to your retailer what your priorities are, so you’re comparing apples with apples
