'Furniture Is So Much More Interesting When It Isn't Brown'

Louise Hilz is an Auckland ( New Zealand ) based Interior Designer , and this is her house . It doesn't quite suit my new place , but Wow !

The kitchen cupboards are covered in a hard wearing vinyl wrap . Yeah , I know , I thought about doing that in printed / branded vinyl in Frankie , my 'Frankenstein' of a mobile home . The difference is I've never gotten around to doing it .

I don't think she does dull .

I don't think she wanted a charcoal stain on the fence .

The 'flowers' are Lego .

That larger Mickey Mouse picture ( above ) is a framed jigsaw puzzle .

The feature wall in the bedroom is acoustic carpet -- that is a colour it comes in , and apparently feels like felt .

Addmittedly , it needs the right house to look right in , but I reckon she's nailed it !

Nope, the crocs and the mickey mouse stuff are horrendous. I prefer Anna Spiro for a clash of colours and patterns

I hate crocs , and I doubt I'd have a Mickey Mouse picture or 3 , but I like the mix and the tones .

In New Zealand , we have an artist called Dick Frizzell , who has done some awazing work mixing iconic pictures with Maori inspired art .

I have a signed and numbered copy of this print ( it's called 'Mickey to Tiki' , so even the name is clever IMO ) , but this pic is the artist and the original . That's as close as I have gotten to having a Mickey Mouse pic as far as I can recall .

I looked at Anna Spiro's website , and the more colourful makeovers she has on there aren't my taste -- they are toned down and pastel in most cases , and way too busy for my liking -- one had over 40 white framed colourful pictures on a mint wall , way too arty farty for me , but then theres tables crammed with bright 'spined' books , heaps of chairs and cushions and rugs and all sorts .

Definitely better than having brown furniture , but definitely not may taste .

There are tons of papers available that would go with your midcentury home. Many people tire of a paper quicker than they are ready to redecorate and they can also look dated in a couple of years. Metallic papers were big im midcentury...perhaps a metallic silver paper? Are you also considering paint? You can get it in so many textures and a blue wall to match the blue in your loveseat would be lovely with some midcentury art and sculpture, or photographs on it. A mirrored wall with or without art or sculpture would also work with midcentury. These treatments are easier to adapt should you wish to change the look slightly from time to time. I would suggest replacing your stairrail with chrome or acrylic if that is in the budget...see how well the loveseat frame looks with the fabric? I hope you will post the "after" photos for us to see. Above all, enjoy the process!

~$400 including expedited shipping. My GC just had his regular countertop guy do them, which wasn't great.... he had trouble making clean cuts. If I were going to do it again I would have pressed for someone with expertise to cut them. You can see in the image that the facing is not made of the stone peak, because too much was broken during the cutting to make the mitered edge. I'm a little bummed, but mostly pleased with the surface (which is the important part) thus far.

There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room. I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed. I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos. The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture. I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Get some real art in there with some color.

Thanks for the replies! My wife suggested we talk to a local real estate agent, so i think that is a good idea... just that Im not sure how helpful they are likely to be if we arent selling yet :) As for saving for our dream house, I dont disagree, however if doing this up nicely over the next ~5 years or so while we live here nets us some extra in the eventual sale, then that of course will help us as well. Interesting thing happened today actually. I got a knock on the door and one of the older neighbours asked if he could take some lemons from the tree. I of course said yes. Anyway he was telling me he had lived in the street for 40 years. I asked him if the house had always looked like this, and he said no that ~30 years ago the old old owner did a massive renovation and pulled off the timber and put up the bricks and gutted the inside of the house. Interesting stuff!

Very much agree, love colour but more dark tones for me, not a fan of bright clashing highlighter colours and i cant stand all white furniture. Lots of people like it because it looks clean but I think it just looks boring.
