Three years ago we planted what we understood to be Liriope Muscari in our front garden. However the type of Liriope supplied was not the clumping variety but one that spreads like a weed suffocating every plant in its path. We’ve removed this Liriope plant plus also a section of ground cover jasmine as the Liriope had spread through the jasmine.

We are proposing to replant the groundcover jasmine in the front section but what is a suitable replacement plant for the Liriope that has a clumping growth habit. We are in Melbourne and this section faces north east so it gets the morning sun. Options include Dianella 'Little Jess' or a dwarf agapanthus. Something that is a similar height would be fine and either flowering/non flowering. My husband is nervous about planting another type of Liriope as it took him a day to clear all the sections where the Liriope was planted.

What are the plants at the back? I’d take this opportunity to transplant a tad forward in the bed, they’ll become cramped where they are. I think that there are probably better options than the Jasmine the way you’ve used them but depends on what the back plants are.

Fleming’s have just released a new plant called Distylium ‘vintage Jade’ they say it’s fabulous, loropetulum’blonde gorgeous’ is just that gorgeous’ has a white fringe flower, rhaphiolepsis ‘oriental pearl’ is beautiful, or you could make it more formal with structural planting which would suit your modern home.

Nothing will affect the feel of your house as much as the quality of the light. If you can at all swing it, keep your divided lights. Looking at your photo, those windows are gorgeous. Can you place glass on the exterior? I have some lead light windows in 2 locations. I made new frames with the leaded old glass on the inside and plain glass on the outside. While not as weather-tight, it's much better than single glass. While not as neat as your present windows, the new windows that have the interior and exterior lights with the spacers between the glass also look great and are at the present standards for energy efficient. We live in the PNW and used Milgard; less expensive than Anderson and Marvin, but so far I'm very happy with them.

Take up broken tiles or replace them all?

Hi Zara, me again. If the tiles are all cracking, there probably are air bubbles in the mortar underneath. Taking it all out is the best choice you can make. Like I've said in your other posts, taking only the broken ones out, will take more time and effort than replacing all of it. On top of that, when it's bad underneath, you can just wait for the next tiles to crack. Wish you well.

You want very easy care so you won't have to be weeding, pruning, watering and feeding because it is hard work on a steep bank like that. Along the bottom edge, I'd plant a few soft, smaller plants that won't require trimming back and are OK to brush against. Many natives are great for tolerating poor soil and not needing to be nurtured or fussed over. Clumps of hardy grasses - enough of each to make an impact, say groups of 5-7 minimum. Perhaps red tussocks (Chionocloa rubra) for their bronze tints, and Silver tussock (Carex comans) for their graceful light green fronds, and Chionochloa conspicua, which is very pretty in flower, (like a miniature toetoe.) Mix in NZ iris like Libertia perigrinans for its bright orange spear like leaves and it will tolerate clay well. Marlborough rock daisy if it is a dry area. A little further back put in that lavender, smaller hebes for flower and scent, and possibly some of the many miniature flaxes which come in a range of colours. There are a few spreading prostrate coprosmas that are great in areas like this too. If you don't like the bronze rambler but it is growing well, think of it as the background to set off something that you like, so perhaps a spiky silvery plant like an astelia will contrast with it and be a feature, or a little bright green hebe, with white flowers would contrast nicely. Behind those, put the feijoas, full size flaxes, corokias, the larger hebes, pittosporums, and coprosmas.

Looks like the palm tree look is working so I would blend that with some succulents maybe agave which can grow large and make great statement plants. Also stick with the stones.

Lovely ideas . as always Julie - will check out. your suggestions. We will wait a month or so to see if the liriope still appear before we put in new plants to avoid a repeat issue..

Bigreader - Here is a photo which shows the plants at the back - a red maple and birds nest ferns. Moving the ferns forward would be problematic as we need to cover them with shade cloth during the warmer months to avoid the foliage browning plus the maple is well established.. Once the maple gets a larger canopy this shoould solve that issue. To the right are pieris and a Prunus hedge.

We will also remove the Liriope in the above section as they have become a thick horrible mat. The plan is to lay some pebbles on this back section as it is just a thoroughfare from the garage and plant some low growing clump type plants in the front sectiion of this strip. Would this look ok?

Great idea waiting, you could always add some compost to the soil before planting as this will give the soil new life for your new plants. The stones in that section would look beautiful and add a stylish look, plants like crassula bluebird, kalanchoe silver spoons, or pittosporum golf ball could look great with your lovely home.

Much appreciated Julie - yes-we plan to feed before replanting. Cross fingers the Lirope don’t reappear! Some great plant ideas. May even consider filling both the back and front sections with pebbles as per your photo. Looking at a grey/brown pebble mix. 🙏
