How do I repair timber joist crack

Hi Everyone,
I have recently brought a 20yrs old brick veneer double storey house. In my garage I found a timber beam/joist with a long crack running horizontally. As this timber is supported by two brick columns, I would imagine this is a structural timber beam/joist trying to distribute the load from upper floor.
I understand that timber expand and shrink and especially this timber beam is above window and bricks are not waterproof.
I’m not sure if I should be concerned about this crack and how do I repair and maintain it? Do I need to water proof the exterior brick surface?
Much appreciated if everyone can provide their advice to me.
Thank you
