Where would you put wardrobes?

Hi there

Sadly, with rising interest rates and sizeable increases in building costs, it seems that we have little hope of extending our home to include a walk-in-robe.

Would you have suggestions on where to place wardrobes for additional clothes storage?

We have several problems.

1. In the master bedroom, We have a king sized bed measuring 190 cm x 220 cm

2. We love watching telly in bed...

Currently, we're using up all the existing wardrobe space in all of the rooms, including the wardrobe in bedroom 3 - which I hate because I feel guilty for taking up my toddler's room - and she'll need that space back when she gets older.

Bedroom 2 is currently used as an office

Please note, the windows in the main bedroom aren't exactly as shown in the diagrams.

Using the image below:

- The window on the right hand side is 80 cm from the wall.

- The windows themselves are 130 cm wide each (including the frame around it), with a gap of 107 between the two windows.

- The window on the left hand side starts about where the existing wardrobe ends. It is 57 cm from the door of the ensuite.

Grateful for ideas!

Add a linen cupboard in stairwell. Swap bed to window wall and build robe same as existing on the other external wall

Hi there nicndrew -- wondering if you ever solved your venting issues if you went ahead and put your range into the fireplace. We have a similar issue - 140 year old victorian and the only realistic plan we can come up with for a new kitchen design is to put our range into an existing fireplace. Our floorplan is constrained by a stairwell as well as a couple of weight bearing walls so we need to work with what we have...I am hoping we can vent up and out the side of the house -- four flues in this chimney but the kitchen flue is closest to the exterior wall. The contractor is coming to take a look on Saturday but would love to gather some suggestions before then.

based on the drawing, the wall where the bed is. HOWEVER, you mentioned that this drawing is not a true depiction of the furniture you will use and the wallpaper. if that is the case, i think the wall paper can work on either wall, it all depends on how busy this wallpaper is and how "plain" the bed is. if you go with a busy wallpaper behind the bed, you may want to keep your bed and bedding on the minimal side so that there is a good visual balance to the overall composition. if you go with snazzier bedroom furniture, then a busy wallpaper may be a bit much and you may want to put it on the other wall or use a textural option to serve as the bed's background rather then another focal point.

I grew up with these panel doors and remember the glorious day they were replaced by a curtain. So if you are open to the idea, for ease of use, least effort and cost that's a simple fix that your daughter may want herself. The top cabinet doors can be considered a cornice for the drapes, and can be upholstered, maybe in the same fabric as her window curtains, and a simple drape with coordinating stripe on the bottom. Search "upholstered doors" on Houzz, and you will see ideas for nailhead trim, tufting, etc as well. You may also be able to add thin trim molding in a custom design to make them special. Good luck!

We are almost finalising our first home plans and would love some help please. Our list of "wants" clashed with our budget and we had to downsize a little. If anyone could help would be much appreciated. Bedroom 1 we are pretty happy with but would love to include a small study nook (just big enough for desk top computer and a chair. Bedroom 2 lost its WIW unfortunately ... would it be possible to put a wardrobe behind the bed and reshape the ensuite to lengthways? Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you all so much.

The new robe can be narrow with just shelving with the existing robe able to be converted to meet hanging needs

By the plans it appears it is 4350mm long to the wardrobes.

Because there is minimal width in the room, (leaving entry door where it is) to have a king size bed and side tables, I would suggest having storage in the bed head and under the bed. Install a robe either right up to air conditioner unit, or remove aircon and install robes along entire wall. Then have a decent set of drawers in front of the windows with your television placed on the wall in the middle of windows. You also need to sort out a new power point for the aircon if keeping. That is not professional nor does it look good to have a trailing power lead.

You could also keep aircon and have the robes installed around the unit. Example photos below.

You have said in opening post the window on right hand side is 80cm from wall, so this is plenty of room for a full wall of robes 60cm deep. Building around your aircon unit.

I think the issue is that the bed is a bit too wide still (it is 190 cm) - not sure if I can do that and also fit the bed (facing the windows) and two bedside tables, even if I change the door opening...?

Ideas for you to consider working with your info and the existng robe is 710 deep, new 400 deep robe would only be 2100 high (ceiling height is 2400) this would help make the room feel more spacious. The TV would be fitted into that robe

This is what Dreamer suggested, you would need to move the aircon so that it doesn't blow on the bed

Is there a way to have the wardrobe on the right hand wall (where the aircon unit currently is) and still fit the bed with two side tables that face the window? we have a quite a high bedhead so it would cover the windows which we won't really want.

This with drawers under the windows with the TV between the windows. You will need to get the exact dimension from the wall to the door to check just incase there was an adjustment.

thank you! Yes the bed is 1900 wide.

Could I fit a hanging wardrobes on the right hand side if I:

- changed the door to a narrow sliding door

- moved the door frame across to be closer to the existing robe, and

- sacrificed one (or both) bedside tables?

I don't see that working for you, the draws would work really well to hold underwear, bags etc and I think it could look good. What about the narrow 400 robe? with the TV on the back facing the bed.

No that’s not what I suggested. I have the bed on the stairwell wall. That is why I suggested a bed head with storage. With the wardrobe along the complete right hand wall, wrapping around the aircon.

No need siriuskey, I’m sure the original poster, Bsoturi can understand my sketch. It is up to them to measure their room correctly, and measure their furniture and see what will fit and won’t, whilst also adding in a robe. We are not in Bsoturi home, we can not do it for them. We can only offer suggestions and they must do the rest. Some rooms can’t have it all. Either remove a bedside table, or two and have a wardrobe. Or have side tables and less storage.

Whilst writing, I had a thought, have the wardrobe wrap around the aircon, 600mm deep, the take the robe across the right wall to maybe 800mm from end of stairwell wall. This will leave enough room for the must needed side tables. siriuskey, you can draw that if you like.

I calculate the wall of the stairs being about 3.4 which is same as the right wall. So the bed and one table would fit with the robe all along the right wall. Some could be less deep for the table or shelving to act as a night stand. Then you would have robe either side of the room. Plenty. Better than current idea of adding an extension out the side of the house... Margot
