How to set up a new lake house- dining, family and great room
Hello! I am looking for advice on setting up a new lakehouse. The back of the house has a lake behind it. And I have 3 rooms I am not sure how I should utilize them. I don’t really think I need 2 living room type areas so thought maybe making the labeled dining room a game room. Making the labeled great room the dining room. Then the labeled family room would be the sofa and TV room. But I am torn because the labled family room does not have a lake view and its right off the bedrooms. Or should I leave it as is? And kids and adults can have their 2 separate areas. Your advice is appreciated and please tell me why you would set it up the way you would. We obviously would love to have the lake view be the focus of the house if possible. Thank you in advance

Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Comments (11)I have a cabinet already should fit there, so did think about that already...maybe I am just having a hard time picturing it. We are designing a 'contemporary' house, so I would say it is fairly modern with touches of older/more vintage pieces. I will take a picture of my cabinet tonight to see what you guys think. Comments (40)We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. Comments (18)squeakerd - it is really hard to get a perspective on the whole area but if this is part of a much larger area then I feel you need to first decide just what you want as the end result. Do you just want your entire area to be one open plan or do you want to break it down into visually defined areas within the open plan. As you have the area now, I don't feel any cohesiveness between your table and the sideboard, I think I would move the sideboard to the end wall, it looks more like it would belong there, even just by the shape of the room. Definitely a larger rug will define the space better - just be careful of any trip hazard with the door nearby - but before you decide on the rug, consider window dressings and whether you want things plain or introduce some bold patterns and what colours look best in the area. Artwork can go where your sideboard is now, but again think colours and impact of design on the whole area. It is all very well to build a room around one piece, but you need to look at the impact that piece will have on other items and what limitations it could cause. I would suggest you set aside some serious time to look through photos on Houzz, especially if you can find areas similar to yours, till you find what appeals to you, put the photos into your ideas book and use that to build your room. 10 months agokitchen could be better swopped with dining room but does the projection of the master suite block some of the view?...which direction is the best views standing in the existing great room and also consider swopping the shower and toilet in the ensuite to keep wet floor away from entry and allow more space for a double shower and avoid glass doors/windows on the side of master bedroom to preserve privacy from public rooms and deck
