Are you sure it’s 1930s and not 1950s? The corner windows are fireplace are very 1950s.

I would say 30’s to 40’s and yes a bungalow. It’s a catch all phrase for a single storey house. Fireplace and picture rail stop me from thinking 50’s Yours has had a number of additions. The porch roof would have been changed

@bigreader I'm fairly certain as we saw the year mentioned in the paperwork when we bought. Though I agree, the windows always seemed more 1950s to me and there arent any others with similar windows in the area. Though I wouldn't have thought that would be something that's been changed from original build?Here's a close up of the fireplace and ceiling rose.

@kate thanks for your insight. Do you think the front bedroom that jutts out past the porch is an extension?

Front porch has definitely been changed as it is a 'separate' structure from the main house - not the same roof line. I wonder what it would have been like originally!

I have that exact ceiling rose and a very similar fireplace in my 1950s cottage, complete with picture rails. I have the original paperwork for the 1950 build and there are three very similar houses in a row in the street with minimal changes. My front bedroom also juts out past the front porch and I’m looking out the corner window as I type. Even the placement of the fuse/power box, the roof tile and the peak at the floorboards indicates 1950s. House can have features copied from earlier eras or added afterwards, it makes them hard to date. What were you trying to determine? The front price was probably concrete slab with a flat roof, maybe with a curved edge.

I really just wanted an idea of what might be original and what's not so when we renovate it doesn't end up being such a Hodge podge! Ie if it's Cali bungalow - the wrought iron porch railing should be timber and the lace should go!!

Should have been peek. Sorry. The small glimpse of the flooring matches the 1950s flooring of the houses in my street. Earlier houses used a lot of pine inc Baltic. In the 1950s Australian hardwood had some popularity but it all depends on the area. It’s not a Californian Bungalow but the lace and the iron should go anyway neither are 1950s. Timber railing would be a sympathetic addition.

Don’t get too hung up on what the original style was. It is not the same house and is probably much more livable. Make it your style.

Go to your local council offices. They will have all the records of your property. The original building, plus any alterations that have been approved by the council.

I think it is a post war 1950 home. Plus renovations over the years.

It is not a California bungalow.

Thanks @kate, not looking to argue. My original question was asking if it is a type of Cali bungalow.

I would term it a 'homestead' style -- its quite unusual how some of the features have been added -- some of the additions seem older than the oroiginal design ( I'm not just talking about the filigrees on the veranda -- the upstairs has quite an agedd look to it ! ) .

But the fireplace and chimney has me confused -- you wouldn't normally have expected that to be on the front wall , but also it is as tall as the upper floor height , so that has possibly been added around the same time as the upstairs rooms were added . But then theres another little 'rise' in the roof further back -- I can't work out when or even why it was added ?

The mods are pretty well done , and add some class to what would have been a more basic design -- it has a bit of interest and character !

Oh you asked what style is my house and you commented what you thought. I don’t see California bungalow But your has been modified so who knows from outside.

Definitely started out as a 50's house and has been added to over time with different owners and styles. Remove the lace on the verandah to start with.
