Room of the Week: A Luxurious Glass-Free Melbourne Ensuite
A Carrara marble feature wall and luxe bath placed centre stage are the key design elements in this restrained ensuite
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most impressive rooms.
Brief/scope of work: For this Hamptons-inspired home, our clients wanted to create something beautiful and luxurious, yet functional. They had their hearts set on a stone feature wall with walk-around shower/toilet and loved the idea of ‘his and hers’ vanities.
Starting point: Inspiration for the ensuite came from many of the bathrooms our clients had loved at different resorts and hotels they had stayed at over the years. They found images and products online that would bring it to life for them. We created his and hers matching vanities with navy joinery on the left and right sides of the room, with a deep Amiata bath by Victoria + Albert as a central feature, and Perrin & Rowe tapware from The English Tapware Company. We featured stunning Carrara marble from floor to ceiling, and user-friendly Italian porcelain tiles on the floor.
We then designed two hidden rooms for the WC and the shower, with no doors. We continued the floor-to-ceiling marble in this area with one long marble shelf, creating a wet room shower that features a massive ceiling-mounted rain shower and highlight window from which you can see the gumtrees outside.
Challenges worked around: The shape of the bathroom was a challenge – initially the layout was very different and included side-by-side vanities but we suggested the his and hers vanities, which our clients loved.

Why this room works: While the ensuite is enormous it still feels grand yet intimate, and the design allows for privacy and makes it easy to clean too, with no glass. It is luxurious yet functional and practical, and visually breathtaking.
