Room of the Week: A Queenslander's Remade Modern/Period Kitchen
It's calm and comforting, modern and period. This reworked kitchen in a 1920s Queenslander is the essence of refinement
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
We renovated this entire 1920s Queenslander with three key points in mind. This included future-proofing to allow multi-generational living; maximisation of natural cross-ventilation and energy efficiency; while delivering a spacious, open-plan style home.
We wanted it to be a calming and comforting house, so as soon as you walk through the door you feel right at home, especially compared to other projects with more of a modern/masculine feel. We wanted very soft, light-grey and white colour tones. This palette, with the use of American white oak, allowed us to achieve this atmosphere.

Starting point
We used Houzz for interior inspiration. Then, the starting point material-wise, was the VJ panelling on the two-pack polyurethane cupboard doors, which was a tie-back to the original Queenslander.

Being Rustic Bronze, it will naturally age over time, creating a beautiful and raw aesthetic.
Another product featured in this home is Laminam Porcelain benchtops, supplied by Ace Stone + Tiles. Laminam benchtops are made from a minimum of 40 percent recycled content and 60 percent recycled water during the manufacturing process.
American oak flooring and shelving also feature strongly.

The home before works
Challenges you worked around
Ensuring the use of sustainable materials and supply chains. For instance, all timber in Solaire Homes is Chain of Custody (CoC) certified and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. This means we can track the source of our timbers right from forest to project, ensuring sustainable and ethical harvesting practices.

The home after works
Why do you think this room works?
We believe this room works well due to the layout of the floor plan, in addition to the materials used. The space is beautifully positioned within the home’s main living level, allowing the modern family to maintain a connection right through from the living area, dining space and kitchen to the outdoor living and pool area.
