For this elegant landmarked Berkeley home, designed by Albert Dodge Coplin, we had the challenge of designing a garden that delicately blends Japanese and English style vernaculars at the request of the client.

A bold vibrant planting scheme design was adopted to give the property a resort style feel, and an almost prehistoric horticultural journey of depth, texture and colour.

The Japanese Garden is considered High Art. It is a celebration of the senses, a marriage of art and nature. Dating back to the 7th century, the creator utilizes a unique combination of rocks, water, sand, paths, stepping stones, and prized plants to craft a setting of absolute tranquility. It embraces paths to walk, benches to sit and areas to simply meditate. It emulates the teachings of Buddha who contemplated the human condition and achieved spiritual enlightenment.
Grand Rapids Landscape Design and Landscaping Installation Company, Harder and Warner Landscaping has created the ultimate Japanese Garden working in tandem with an enlightened client with a true vision. Viewed from a dozen different access points, it is a landscape in motion with each view even more spectacular than the last! The gentle bubbling of the water, the scent of the green plants and the contrast of hardscapes and textured sands satiate the senses and feed the spirit. The owners are thrilled with the results and have titled our designer “Monet with a shovel”.

A pondless water feature constructed for beauty. Shelves of Moss rock boulder were constructed at precise elevations to create a tranquil sound of flowing water. Water feature was designed for safety - our customer has small children and they did not want any depth of standing water. Lighting accentuates the surrounding landscape, water and boulder to provide a wonderful evening ambiance.

This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.

Sukiya Living - indoor outdoor living - is a huge part of a Japanese garden. Low windows stretch along much of the back of the house. The patio feels like a true extension of the interior space. This photograph was taken on the upper deck near the hottub. A dry stream bed with a buried drain tile captures the water coming off both the patio and the back lawn and carries it to the north around the house.

Outdoor bathroom and meditation/yoga area. This is a tiny space with a sense of enclosure and privacy. Two of the walls being zincalume corrugated iron and the others old recycled railway sleepers. The ground cover plantings are a combination of lawn camomile, assorted thymes and purple sage creating a fragrant walk to both the bath and the yoga /meditation platform. Various mints and rosemary which are planted on the perimeter mixed in with subtropical plants are also for picking and adding to the bath water. A brugmansia and frangipani have also been planted for their fragrance. There is also a small self contained water feature in one corner. The bath is plumbed into the house water system so many hours can be spent luxuriating in the deep cast iron, claw foot bath.
