Jay Sifford Garden DesignThis trio of rusting iron spheres was used to speak to the granite spheres in the front yard. The design styles were different from front garden to back garden so I felt it important to have some connection to bring about a sense of cohesion.
The aspaliered Bloodgood maple speaks to the standard form Bloodgood opposite the patio area as well as to the aspaliered apple trees on the opposite side. This comparison/contrast keeps the eye moving around the space.

I saved clear glass, then broke it up with a hammer and tumbled it in a cement mixer. It only takes about 40 minutes to make the shards completely safe. You can ram your hand into this stuff with immunity. Very interesting. Imagine guiding a person to a destination with a ribbon of light, compared to the common walkway light
Earthly Delights Landscape DesignThe Meredith Townes Project was a small backyard of a townhome. The clients had wanted to transform their existing backyard with a small patio to a New Orleans style courtyard. The homeowners enjoyed gourmet cooking and fine wines and wanted a place for entertaining friends. They also wanted a quiet private retreat where they could relax at the end of the day. Their wish list included a fountain and planters.
Meredith Townes were constructed in the 1970’s. This led to some challenges in design and construction of the courtyard. The original oversized brick used on the walls on either side of the courtyard were no longer being produced. Due to the age of the walls, attaching structures was not permitted. Other obstacles included the locations of the HVAC unit and the utility boxes.
Working with the homeowners, the designer developed three concepts for the courtyard. When the clients determined the preferred layout, a detailed design was developed.
There was much attention devoted to the selection of materials for the courtyard. The Mason went to great lengths to find brick that strongly resembled the existing obsolete brick. Every element of the project was carefully analyzed before selection was made, from the fountain mask, to the tile, to the faucet handles. The HVAC was moved to an enclosed storage area outside the courtyard and a fenced corner of the courtyard to conceal the grill and serve as additional storage.

Earth Designs Garden and Build London and EssexIn the wide, side return area of this garden we planted a flat top tree to create a courtyard feel. This creates a pretty canopy which is covered in fairy lights at night.
We also added a wide thin storage unit with double doors in this area, to provide some easily accessible storage. This was painted in the same dark grey as the fence and gate to help it blend into the background.
Naturescapes Landscape Specialists, LtdAt this couple’s house, we worked in the front and rear. Out front, we enlarged the bedded area to embrace the front walkway and to be more proportionate with the large covered porch. Then we brought in conditioned bio-soil to improve the existing site. Next, we transplanted some larger crowded Boxwoods throughout and added shrubs, perennials and bulbs to the bedded area to make a more welcoming feel to the front of the house and giving it year-round interest.
In the rear, we enlarged the beds around the patio, created pathways to the lawn and made a step way/walkway to the patio from the driveway. For the latter, we used slab flagstone steppers and river rock to check the flow of water coming from uphill during heavy rains. We added water-loving shrubs and perennials to create an inviting feel to the rear area.
