This stunning mid-century whole house remodel focuses on integrating great new fixtures, finishes and materials, while preserving the integrity of the original architectural aesthetic. This atomic age gem has many original architectural features like a custom copper fireplace hood, 12' stacking wood doors, and original woodwork that mesh seamlessly with the new design elements. The living room, dining area and kitchen all blend together, in an artists' loft-style one-big-room / room without walls design that was popular in mid-century modern architecture. One solution: create small groupings of furniture within the larger space. An original Wassily chair (designed by Marcel Breuer) and Barcelona chair (designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) and an Eames tulip table make an intimate setting next to the fireplace. Hanging on the fireplace wall is a Mark Bennett print designed for Wirsching, who is a fan of the old TV series, I Dream of Jeannie. Bennett is a world-recognized contemporary artist who is a friend of Hoffman and Wirsching from L.A.

Located in Menlo Park, California, this 3,000 sf. remodel was carefully crafted to generate excitement and make maximum use of the owner’s strict budget and comply with the city’s stringent planning code. It was understood that not everything was to be redone from a prior owner’s quirky remodel which included odd inward angled walls, circular windows and cedar shingles. Remedial work to remove and prevent dry rot ate into the budget as well. Studied alterations to the exterior include a new trellis over the garage door, pushing the entry out to create a new soaring stair hall and stripping the exterior down to simplify its appearance. The new steel entry stair leads to a floating bookcase that pivots to the family room. For budget reasons, it was decided to keep the existing cedar shingles. Upstairs, a large oak multi-level staircase was replaced with the new simple run of stairs. Mid Century Modern

This remodel of a mid century gem is located in the town of Lincoln, MA, a hot bed of modernist homes inspired by Walter Gropius’ own house built nearby in the 1940s. Flavin Architects updated the design by opening up the kitchen and living room. Spectacular exposed beams were lightened with a light grey stain and the floor was finished in a dark grey cerused oak stain.
