Stainless steel backsplash tiles

I'm wanting to tile my kitchen backsplash with stainless steel tiles. How well do they cut? Does it leave a sharp edge?

I'm not sure as to how easy they are to install, but an installer would be able to. Ask the reps you found your tile at - they will know best.

Otherwise, I have the following comments about SS tiles:
1. High maintenance - if you have SS appliances you already know how much effort they take to keep them sparkling clean.
2. Scratch easily, especially when removing grease and sticky messes.
3. Very trendy - will look dated in a couple of years.
4. Can make a kitchen look very cold and stark depending on the look in the rest of the kitchen.
5. Have had to remove SS back splash from clients kitchen (her choice at the time) because she couldn't stand buffing the streaks out after wiping them down.

If you really want to have a hit of SS on your back splash, I would suggest a decorative strip instead of the entire wall.
Have you ever seen back painted glass as a back splash? They're gorgeous and you can use metallic paint to give you a similar look without the maintenance required with the tiles.

The first three are grey paint, the last is a metallic paint (car paint). Your color choices are endless too. Nice clean simple look, easy to clean - no grout lines. Water and vineger does the trick. What do you think?

We have installed SS small subway tiles on our backsplash, behind the range too. Yes, you can cut them the same on a tile saw and the edges will be sharp, nothing a hasp and a few strokes won't cure.

Your forever home? you like the look? Go for it!!! we did and the compliments we got were "rich looking, clean, shiny" everything we wanted to accomplish..I say go for it!

On the glass backsplash idea, you know how tough it is to not steak your windows when cleaning them and I would imagine you would have to use tempered glass? Also, what about breakage? Don't forget your substraight (wall behind) would have to be perfect for glass to be completely flat.

I agree though, it looks stunning!

You have some good ideas but if you're going to sell soon and aren't planning on taking the soffit out, I would just do some minor changes and keep the cabinets (just add a couple cabinets). I wouldn't move the sink but just get a nice stainless steel sink and update faucet. I'd get a stainless stove vent. Remove the wall on the left of the refrigerator but then just do a small pull out pantry on the right of the refrigerator. And, put a cabinet above the refrigerator and make it look built in. A glass backsplash, can lights on the ceiling and pendants above the penninsula. I think a raised counter will make the kitchen/room feel smaller.

I think we are going to use the white subway tile to keep the budget down as I priced new tiles and it would blow out the budget. Really like the contrast grout idea to add a bit of texture and pattern. My partner is a builder and he loves the reclaimed wood shelf idea as we have a lot of spear old wood left over from the renovation. We have made a dinning table and fire place mantel from it already so it would tie in really well.

Tess, I hope I'm not too late with the following advice. Don't ever paint brick. Your house is a simple design, exterior wise. Paint wont fix it. What's missing is a designed garden. Even the simplest brick house can look like an inviting, lived in home when it has a structured garden surrounding it. For less than the price of paint, invest in a landscaper to design a garden that will soften and greatly enhance your homes street appeal ...and add many $ in value. Painted brick detracts from value and has to be repainted periodically, defeating the purpose of brick, which is, no maintenance. Besides, your house, painted white or cream as has been suggested here, would stand out in the street like a proverbial sore thumb. Trust me, landscape, starting at the street boundary and leave the bricks alone. Good luck.

We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. I need to work out what I will do now where the fridge was and there is the angle change (does that make sense?).
