Joni, the plum color of the sofa with your greige carpet has the potential to be very rich, but, IMHO, you need to keep it much more subtle than any of your rug choices. I'd bring the bling in with pillows on the sofa and art. I think linlac is on the right track when she suggests a soft, solid rug if you want a rug at all.

I am glad your new carpeting isn't any lighter. The plum is very dark and will be outlined seen on top of anything light.

yes it is. we have 2 dogs that get my carpet very dirty especially with that light color i have. so we decided to go with a multicolor so everything didnt show so much. Also the reason for the area rug-to help preserve the carpet. i initially planned on wood throughout the upstairs but both my decorator and the wood installer talked me out of it! I'm wondering if I made a mistake planning to carpet this room. the kitchen and diningroom are open to the livingroom and have golden oak hardwood and the entryway and hall is also open and has ceramic tile. rest of the upstairs- livingroom, hallway and 2 bedrooms are carpet.

You have 3 floorings which need to be considered / not to add in much more tones, but repeat some of the textures possibly [possibly the black table base, repeating your stools]... how light/medium/dark your kitchen is?

I do really like the black table base. The one thing I don't like about my stone tables is their extremely heavy and make a rug pucker under them. So your saying to repeat textures/tones rather than add more new ones in?

Joni, imo I think that another material could better be in very small accessory. I can't see/ didn't know coffee table was stone-- does it seem like your tile / and not in 'competition'? [are they sort of formal?] --- if it's about the color of new carpeting, my point might not matter. Think cohesive / bringing current materials and their colors and textures, instead of adding new for bigger items.

everdebz, the kitchen is behind me in the pics and the diningroom is open off to the left next to the kitchen. the stone tables are a whitish rock. thanks for the color samples. the blackberry looks closer to my couch but the marooned is a close match to what i planned to use as an accent wall in the master bedroom. also you dont really see the tile with the tables because the back of the couch is in the way. ill post a pic. havingfun-all ideas are great at this point. thanks guys!

No area rug with that carpet. Purple looks great with acid green, mustard, or orange. You need a much longer media cabinet.

i am sorry, i don't think pillows are art. and if asked i would have pulled down. i never mean to insult people. Not sure i understand. I already did pull except the ones you like. But i pulled everything off. I will admit i am intense when it comes to art, i do not understand paying 100s of dollars for art that you can get on a pillow. That's what I'm afraid of, Joni, that it will blend in so much it disappears. But you'll never know for sure till you get it in place on the actual carpet. It's a great rug, so I hope it works.

maybe you should paint the table bases.

It reminds me of an abstract flower garden. The table is you could say the spot to sit down. One mansion's backyard had that shape in stone seating.
