Design dilemma- flooring

We are renovating our Californian Bungalow. The old front part of the house is staying and the entire back part has been demolished. The front part has original honey coloured floorboards (Photo attached) in the hallway. I have my heart set on floorboards (floating/hybrid) for the large open plan back of the house, something like a Blackbutt. Completely different coloured flooring.

My design dilemma is -

1. Leave the floorboards in the hallway, and place a hall runner down the middle.

2. Cover the floorboards in the hallway with new flooring.

3. Try to match our preferred flooring in the new part to the original flooring.

Sand Tain and polish exiting boards to match the new boards better. They will still look diff but not so bad. The honey colour is just the aged polish

Kate is right that the honey-colour is discoloration of the original finish, sometimes caused by UV light. Here is a photo of the same cypress pine flooring which has been sanded back with a clear satin finish.

Unless you are putting real timber floorboards down I wouldn't try and match it. I would imagine that the new extension would have a very different feel to the original with materials, heights, glazing and details so there is no need to make the floor consistent - it will be obvious to everybody where the old finishes and the new starts.

Just make sure that you spend some decent money on your new floating floor as there is nothing worse then stepping from real timber to a floating floor that feels and looks fake.

Make sure you get a sample of your new blackbutt floating floor and lay it against the existing cypress pine to make sure it looks different enough.

Thank you for ideas the room is little dark in day but I love the night effect, we are repainting so could look at half the tone of current colour, the chairs I have in the room are silver. The photo does not reflect this, wonder if gold would be odd the stone sofa has metal legs, the house is 1970 ContempOry but I love to mix old and new, and wanting elegant French look, what type of comfy chairs should I get to match sofa and where would they best fit, do you think the armoire go next to fire.? with our old settee should I keep this single chair but cover it? I wonder if it too bulky? Also the leather chair is brown should I keep this in the room or not. the mirror above chairs is silver and gold frame should I shift it /paint it /leave it and add tall lamp in this ares to make reading corner, and can pull in chairs when have guests? The oak cabinet is a keeper have I got this in the best position, I appreciate all ideas.

I agree with you the pillars are unfortunate. The replacement tiles will stand out no matter how close they come to matching so you're better off making sure they are clearly different so the gray one is better. Putting busy mosaic tiles could look nice but will interrupt the flow between rooms which I'm guessing is your problem with the columns in the first place. You will need to create a dextrous solution to tying into the 2x4 wall on the left side but I think it can be done tastefully- maybe beveling it back once you get past he end of that wall.

I am planning to add scatter cushions and think if I do a pair of larger ones for each end so they go over the arms to creat height at each end, and a couple of smaller ones, I want to bring some colour in too. I do like the idea of a larger side light at either end to, Switching the sofas is going to be my final fix if all else fails!!

Curtain Length Dilemma

I got some custom made linen curtains installed yesterday which I was really excited about. On closer inspection I noticed that they are quite uneven at the bottom: on the sides of the windows they just float over the carpet which is what I requested, however, towards the middle they are about 3cm off the ground. The curtains are on a double track with the lining being able to be pulled across at night time and the lining is floor length and shows slightly at the bottom where the linen sheers are shorter. I was wondering if anyone here can give me some advice on whether I should request them to be adjusted or is it acceptable to have a length difference of about 2cm from sides to middle? I also feel the middle looks too short. I am paying a lot of money to get them custom made so I feel they should be perfect, right? Looking forward to your opinions and advice.
