Hi this is our formal living. It is a difficult room to work with as it is a odd rectangle space and there are sliding doors in the middle. What would you do to redecorate this room
What are you planning on keeping? Most of the furniture looks fairly new. Are there any photos from other angles? Does the room need improved functionality?
Yeah the sofa and table are like 3 years old. Just wondering in terms of the soft furnishings and painting. Also whether the functionality of the room can can be improved.
You have said this is your formal loving room, so how do you use this room? For family living or when you have guests? As Kate asked, do you want to access the door - if so, perhaps try moving the lounge to the hall side. Perhaps take away the rug - you have carpet already. Decide what you love, whether it is the art work or the cushions or the floral display and keep that and then find other items that go together... for me the individual pieces are not working well together.
I think a standard lamp where the floral arrangement is would be better. If it was me I'd probably want to make it seem less formal and shiny and I'd do that by replacing rug and cushions with creamy toned natural feeling products with texture
Yes you are right. It is a weird design house so this room you pass by through hallway. I don’t have a floor plan. But this pic may help. It is from When we bought the house and we changed the carpet. We don’t use this space at all. Only very rarely. We have a informal lounge. But I didn’t know what else to put here. As it’s meant to be a formal lounge area. Slide door is blocked because we thought sofa might not look good the other way. We have access to the outdoor area through our informal living room.
You obviously like the sofa because you bought it for a room that doesn’t get used?... Because the sofa has no “texture” or warmth to it, you will have to bring texture and warmth into the room with cushions and natural pieces. The shiny coffee table is also not adding any warmth to the room. Again you must like it if you purchased it. I would add cushions with lots of texture as per photos attached. Bring in rattan pieces as well. A rattan serving tray in the middle of coffee table, a rattan plant stand for the corner. Install sheer linen curtains over the blind. Again the blind is not full of texture and warmth. Adding a sheer curtain would make a difference. Look at photos on google “minimalist boho lounge rooms”. See if you like that decorating aesthetic. It seems at the moment every thing is shiny and bland.
Maybe clean the windows/sliding door, have organised outside furniture and put plants in pots outside of window and make a nice out look. You can open the blind and have a feature when walking through the room.
A floor lamp instead of flowers, a large abstract artwork, textured throw and cushions and something beautiful on your coffee table would look gorgeous and give the room a softer more inviting look
