Green Waste and Garden Waste Disposal

Have you just mowed your lawn, trimmed your hedge, cleared your garden, and are you looking for a service provider to perform “green waste disposal”?

Green waste includes all waste from gardening (dead leaves), pruning (hedge trimming, shrubs), tree cutting (trunk, branch), lawn clippings (grass), clearing of flowerbeds (brush), and other plant waste from your park or garden. To avoid the development of odors, green waste must be evacuated quickly in order to be crushed or composted.

How to dispose of your green waste?

There are many ways to clear out of green waste legally. Why not by adopting an eco-responsible approach to recovering these raw materials? Law, waste disposal, composting, what you need to know, what to do, what not to do...

What is meant by “green waste”?

The so-called “green” waste is the waste of vegetable origin residual from the maintenance of the garden and, incidentally, from the kitchen:

  • Grass from mowing and mowing ;
  • dead leaves ;
  • Residues from pruning, pruning, and clearing ;
  • Plants that are not diseased and non-invasive from the cleaning of the beds (avoid weed seeds, thistles, mint or horsetail roots, etc.);
  • Non-edible fruit fallen from trees;
  • Vegetable peelings...

Cedar pruning waste - It is forbidden to burn cedar waste due to the fire hazard it can create.

What the law says

It is strictly forbidden to burn household waste. However, green waste is placed in the household waste box. It is therefore also strictly forbidden to burn green waste, contrary to what one might think.

The risks

Burning plants pollute the air, disturb the neighborhood ( smoke, smells, etc.), and generate significant fire risks. Three good reasons to respect the law! But if these reasons are not enough for you, the risk of a fine of up to $500 should convince you!

Exemptions

The prefect may however grant exemptions under certain conditions (departmental health regulations), in particular, to prevent the spread of epidemics caused by worms, bacteria, or parasites that affect certain plants. But like any derogation, the rules are strict: state of the plants, periods, and times of burning... In all cases, you must inquire at the town hall.

What solutions for green waste

It is estimated that more than one million tons of green waste are in our household waste. An unnecessary cost for lost raw material. But then, if we don't burn and if we don't

throw in the trash... what can we do with our green waste? To tell the truth, there is no shortage of solutions, from organic recovery through composting, for example, to the recovery of materials through recycling or reuse, including energy recovery, which is certainly more specific, but no less interesting, example. by the combustion of certain woods, mechanization, the production of biofuels... So, for us, individuals, what simple and accessible solutions are offered to us?

Pruning and cleaning waste

Many communities set up a selective collection dedicated to green waste, regular or even weekly collection, or on simple request. The waste is then treated according to the choice of the agglomeration, most often by composting.

Waste collection centers

When shredding and composting are practiced, local authorities often give their constituents free access to compost and/or (shredded wood).

Specialized companies

Getting to a recycling center is not always possible (too large volume of waste, lack of a suitable vehicle, etc.). In this case, waste management professionalsare available for the job, which can take care of the plants or grind them on site.

Grinding and mulching

You can also use your green waste, whole (straw, dry grass, twigs, etc.), or crushed (branches, etc.). An eco-responsible method, economical (free, water-saving), and good for the earth (protective, fertilizing...).

Animal Diet

Some waste can be used to feed pets and live stocks. Lettuce leaves, carrot tops (which you can also make a delicious pesto!) and peelings for the hens, dried grass, grasses, clover, dandelions, and bindweed for the rabbits ...

Fuel

Branches can be tied into bundles or used as is to light the fireplace, stove, or barbecue.

Branches and trunks from the pruning or felling of trees can be cut up and used as fuel. However, a drying time must be respected.

Homemade Compost

The most interesting method remains home composting: easy, on-site, and source of raw material for the garden: a 100% natural and effective fertilizer…

Composting your green waste is legal, it's fun and it's Is useful. You can put leaves, straw, sawdust, shavings and crushed branches, fresh or dry grass, faded flowers, vegetable tops and peelings, fruits, coffee ...

DIY-style reuse

There are also many creative ways to make flexible branches, twigs, branches, bark, and moss for suspensions, Hazel twigs to be useful and turn into a creative work of art

The recovery of green waste is an accessible challenge, an eco-responsible approach on a daily basis with many advantages:

  • It's economical: less raw materials to buy for the garden, less watering thanks to mulching...
  • It's ecological: we limit waste, we reuse...
  • It saves time: we compost on-site rather than going to the waste collection center;
  • It's productive: we don't destroy, we create raw materials and added value by feeding the vegetable garden...
  • It can be fun and educational by involving children in the process...
