Kitchen cabinet design

Looking for some advice re kitchen cabinets. I had set my heart on v groove cabinets, but after a preliminary discussion with the kitchen company they have tried to talk me out of them because my cabinets are not all the same width and it obviously has a repeat pattern. Has anyone else come across this problem? The kitchen guy wants me to use a mix of flat door fronts and v groove which is not my preferred look. Any advice or similar experiences? I have included the kitchen layout.

From the plans it looks to me like the two overheads are the same size and two tall cabinets also. If so, you could use v groove as the hero on those as well as the front of your island and have flat panels to butler’s and bottom cabinets elsewhere, especially works well if these are a different colour. Check to see how wide the panel sections are before they need to add the next panel as it may be you end up with an irregular sized end board on the cabinets/ island which detracts from the look you are after ( hope this makes sense). A work around for this is to have your cupboards/island the same measurements as full panels and/or have cuts end on a ‘v’ so the look is symmetrical.

Your top cabinets wont match the bottom exactly as in the lines wont match up from top to bottom and you wont be happy. He wants you to be if not ecstatic, atleast happy.

Heres a pic of a kitchen we did last year, the top to bottom are slightly off. Like you the owner was set on having v groove too. She loves it and doesnt care, not everyone is okay with slightly off and they will become unhappy and it doesnt matter how many times you tell them there will be slight variations from top to bottom, unless they finally see it for themselves they dont realize until its too late. And unhappy customers doesnt make anyone happy.

Also V groove is very popular this year too.

You have some good ideas but if you're going to sell soon and aren't planning on taking the soffit out, I would just do some minor changes and keep the cabinets (just add a couple cabinets). I wouldn't move the sink but just get a nice stainless steel sink and update faucet. I'd get a stainless stove vent. Remove the wall on the left of the refrigerator but then just do a small pull out pantry on the right of the refrigerator. And, put a cabinet above the refrigerator and make it look built in. A glass backsplash, can lights on the ceiling and pendants above the penninsula. I think a raised counter will make the kitchen/room feel smaller.

I would balance the fridge cabinet wall by having the fridge centred between two narrower pantry cabinets as it currently feels far to heavy for your space. Alternatively, I would recommend having a narrow pantry on the left of the fridge with a full height cabinet with counter on the right with an upper cabinet above. This would help your space feel larger.

Thanks for your comments everyone. We've taken your advice (Luke and NH) and changed the island to a rectangle (1200 x 3000). We lose one breakfast bar seat but gain storage and dining room space plus it shortens the distances from the island to the cooktops. It also removes the need for a corner carousel. We're much happier with this result. Dairy_maid, we've done what you suggested and walked through some common tasks. Overall it works reasonably well although we may keep some coffee spoons and butter knives in the scullery drawers for morning toast and coffee. We've also invested in a "silent" rangehood which has the motor on the outside of the house behind the fridge and we've upgraded the scullery sink to one that is 600 x 400 (internal size). Fabrication starts tomorrow. Woohoo. Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. The design has been significantly improved with your input.

So we have finally decided on a kitchen design: Taken inspiration from : this is the floor plan. The dinning area will be moved to next to the steps, in front of the alfresco area. The family room will be in front of the kitchen with another outdoor area next to it. But dilemma not is that we cannot decide on plain cabinet doors or shaker style. The colour of the doors will be Satin White with black knobs matching the black granite sink and charcoal glass splash back. The bench top will most likely be something similar to Calcutta Quartz. I like the modern simplicity of plain doors but i don't want it to look too clinical. I like how shaker style adds a bit of character to the whole area, but i don't want it to look too traditional. What do you think? Any other style suggestions?
