Should I rip out out or paint over the wooden board/closed off heater?

Hello all, we’ve just started renovating the house and about to start the lounge/living room and I’m wondering if we should rip off the wooden cover (over an old gas heater) or paint over it? I’m worried if I do and it looks ugly i won’t be able to put it back as I’ll ruin the wood. I’m planning on painting the room white and was thinking of painting it over white or the bricks a different colour but it might be too much.
Any thoughts on what I should do?

If your renovating the home, and the gas heater no longer works. Look at removing the heater completely.

The wooden trim is really interesting and leaving or painting it and the bricks behind white will look good. However, why continue to hide a old gas heater which should really be decommissioned and removed correctly.

Thanks Orangecamera. It's still a work in progress and mud everywhere Sorry we did look at having the steps' off set' but it didn't seem to go with only three steps and a small area. And about the zen well the cats are doing that for us much to our disappointment (it's still like a litter box to them). We went to the garden supply place still not knowing what kind of stones we were getting. We stood in front of all the bins (there where many). We even looked at mixing some. The grey stones had a bin more the size we wanted but we ended up getting the golden fleck. It was a little smaller, which was a shame, the bigger ones were so mixed in their grading it looked too messy. So this is what we finished up with. It was seagardens that got me thinking away from grey and nwduck mentioning the drainage. So this has really helped. Also everyone seem to think the wooden steps needed to go a lot lower. Next it's figuring out where the large river stones should go

We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. I need to work out what I will do now where the fridge was and there is the angle change (does that make sense?).

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone and sorry I didn't explain the polycarbonate a bit better :) This is along the lines of what we'll be using... http://www.psp.co.nz/building-brands/corrugated-sheeting/suntuf-polycarbonate The area is an absolute sun trap and we're hoping to use it as an extension to our living space, especially on rainy days! I've just sent my husband out to get a few pots of different stains for is to try - darkest brown (cedar) and a lighter brown (rustic oak) both by Cabots + the black we already have. Hopefully we can decide between one of those! I probably should have mentioned we will have black aluminium pool fencing running along the top of the second retaining wall - so the real question is do we keep everything black (pool fencing, horizontal fence, retaining walls and pergola) or do we go with a dark (or even light) brown for the pergola and retaining walls.... We just keep going around in circles at the moment. Decisions, decisions! Thanks again :)

There are some great comment here, but my take on this would be if you are going custom to take your time and look around. Many designers offer different takes on each person's preference. The colours you have are good but I'd personally would opt for a more warmer cream, with a self print pattern. I would also suggest pinch pleated curtains and not pencil pleat as you have currently, pinch pleated curtains will give you uniformed pleats from top to bottom. In addition to this I would suggest you use blackout linen to prevent light to enter the room, and possibly interlining so that you retain some thermal properties in your fixtures. Having custom made curtains are a lifetime choice for most customers, take your time and don't settle for the first company you come across. The space above your bed i would possibly add a sheer fabric roman blind which is slightly see through but enough to give you privacy if you bedroom is situated on the ground floor. You can also get the a roman blind to match your new curtains if you'd like a more repetitive theme in your bedroom. I would suggest if you do opt for a roman blind, and you are looking for a good qualities add blackout linen. To be honest with you, we’re actually not sure if there is a gas heater there. Lol We just assume there is as there is no chimney for it to be a fireplace behind it. I’d love to open it up to check but would be worried to wreck the wood paneling. Would you have any suggestions to get it off without ruining it? Thank you for your advice! 🙂

You would very carefully take the top “mantel” away, and then have a look behind the panelling. At the moment it is taking up storage room if there is nothing there.

Try removing the kicker and see what is there. But the panelling looks cheep anyway and I would remove it and replace it after ensuring whatever behind is safe

It looks very wide for a gas heater, I would open it up and remove the timber panelling as it's a waste of shelving space. But if you don't agree grab a small hand saw and run it down between a vertical timber board

Thank you all for your advice and insight! I’ll definitely try pulling back the timber or lifting the mantle just to see what is behind there and go from there. I am think of removing it perhaps and going for something different. Or if worst comes to worst just painting it perhaps. Thank you guys! 🙏🏼
