There was an existing dry stacked fieldstone wall dating back to the 18th century that ran through the property. Stone from a derelict portion of the wall that had been buried in the woods was used to create the Hobbit House and new elements.
Of course we're not always this lucky to have a material source on site! In other cases, we often have the opportunity to reuse stone from older structures in our area that have been demolished rather than source a new product.
